View Full Version : Musically Inclined?

So I went out this weekend and bought the musical instrument I've been wanting for years: a violin! I just dropped it off at the music store to have the bridge installed and everything tuned.
It got me wondering: how many of you on here are "instrumentally inclined"? If you are, what instrument(s) do you play?
I used to play the trumpet...but haven't picked one up in years.

I would love to know how to play the violin....my grandfather mastered it! I can still hear his music and he passed away when I was 12!
To stay on topic...I don't know how to play any instruments.

I used to be a pretty good trumpet player myself. I took piano lessons, but that doesn't mean I'm good at it!

That is great you are going to fulfill a dream. We have a friend who's child is 13 and plays the violin very well. He takes lessons from a student at the University of Alabama.
But no I took piano lessons for about 3 years but could maybe play "twinkle twinkle little star" now. I wish I could do more. They say children who play instruments especially stringed instruments make better grades in school.
Way to go!

I play clarinet fairly well. I taught myself to play the alto sax years ago, but I don't remember how now. 6 years of piano lessons: I can play anything with my right hand, but I can't play worth a toot with my left. I play ONE hymn very well! One! Pretty sad. But I love to sit with my husband, who plays piano beautifully, and play the melody an octave higher as he plays with both hands.
The violin is such a beautiful instrument. I'd love to be able to play it.

We need to see what everyone here can play and then from a Dlive band. What fun we could have.
I love to listen to someone play the violin. We are never too old to learn new things. Have fun as you learn to play it!

I took piano lessons for a while when I was a teen. Some of it is still with me. I can still read notes a little. But, I am taking it back up and learning more from where I left off. :)
You go Demopolite! A violin, I'm sure, is a fun instrument to play. I wish you all the luck with that!:)

As you can tell from my name, I love to play the Flute. I started out in 5th grade and played all through college. I now play for my church on a regular basis. I do not have a lot of God given talent but I practice hard. I guess everyone needs a hobby and playing the Flute is my hobby.

I played the trumpet in the band and was quite good until I had braces, learned to play with braces, then when I got the off, I could never get my range back. My uncle played the trumpet and was spectacular-ever since I was really little, that was the instrument I knew I wanted to play. It was fun and the brass section always had the cool solos!

What amazed me when he played it, you never could actually see the harp, NO DOUBT he was the MASTER of the juice harp. He used to serenade us on the way home from football practice, on the school bus, AT school in the gym weightlifting, in the hayfields bayling hay, Ben could play it anywhere, at anytime. Faith I feel your PAIN, I truly miss Benny. He was ONE of the BEST friends you could ever ask for :)

I started playing snare drum in 5th grade ('84) played bass drum, triple toms, quads, quints. Went back to snare, learned a trap set in '93. Bought my own drum set in 1999. OCDP 5 piece with pearl crash and ride cymbals and hi-hat.
Added onto that in 2000 with a Roland TD5 electronic 8 piece set. Combined the 2 sets for a total of 13 pieces which I can play very well!
i LUV to play the "pi-naner" ... took lessons for 1-1/2 yrs & pretty much taught my self after that. am an ok beginner, if i must toot my own horn.
also am trying to learn the git-tar but is kinda slow cuz i dont have much time to practice like needed to excel.
also like to sing when my voice isnt strained!

I took piano lessons in junior high and high school (that was so long ago, Beethoven's grandmother taught me). I played cymbals (oooooh) in the governor's inaugural parade and xylophone in the band/orchestra one year.
I have always wanted to play the violin (not the fiddle), and guitar sounds interesting. I would really like to get into the synthesizer/keyboard thing, like Beethoven in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." Frankly, that rocked.

I started with organ when I was about four--thanks to my grandmother. The organ led to piano at about 6. Played that forever. Self taught, and since I play by ear, over all those years I managed to teach myself all the intricacies of reading sheet music.
Around 15, my sis got an acoustic guitar, and I HAD to learn how to play it. So I borrowed it as often as possible... then finally got my first electric at 16 for Christmas. Learned to play it (self taught). Then I got a bass. Lost interest in the electric guitar and bought myself a 6-string acoustic/electric (Takamine), later a 12-string acoustic (alvarez), and a 6-string classical guitar acoustic/electric (nylon strings.... it's an Ovation). No piano lessons, but I have been taking a few lessons (once a week) over at UWA for classical guitar (fingerpicking). I've learned a few more things that have helped out a lot.
Over the past few years, I've picked up several other string instruments and have adapted pretty well. Banjo, mandolin, and dulcimer. All you have to do is download some reading material from the internet if you have a basic understanding and just go with it.
demopolite: a violin has the same tuning/fret pattern as a mandolin (so I know the notes on the fretboard), so I've been wanting to get a violin and try playing "mandolin with a bow" ...
good luck.... The best way for me to learn an instrument is to play along with things I like to listen to. Then practicing is always fun.

I learned to play the clarinet in school. Our band never marched nor did it stay together long, but I can probably still play a song. I've played the piano since 2nd grade. I only play music, and I would LOVE to be able to play by ear. I can pretty much play anything that I have sheet music to. I played in a wedding once. It was a friend of a friend who's pianist got sick or something at the last minute. I was absolutelyl terrified but lived through it. I enjoy playing in the privacy of my own home without an audience as I never had a recital, but I am known to bang rather loudly when I get mad....poor piano!! My daddy still jokes about that.

I don't have time to learn and my parents didn't force me to learn when I was younger. I own a guitar and violin. I wish I could play them both. One day I will get around to learning how to play. I can play simple songs on the piano if I sit down and peck it out for a week or two then memorize it. I can play by sight but it would take me about 10 minutes to play one song it is so slow. I sing. That's an instrument right?

Unfortunately the only musical inclination I have is singing in the shower. I kinda wish that I would've learned to play an instrument when I was younger, but my sister Boisterous was the instrument player-she really sucked when she started(5th grade-she'll probably kill me for saying that-lol) but eventually got really good at playing the clarinet.

I've been told with my slender fingers, I should've played piano. The best I could ever attempt at playing an instrument was playing "Another Bites the Dust" on a piece of paper wrapped around a comb. That was during study hall at Booneville (Ms.) High School when I was in the 10th grade.
Maybe that is why I was runner-up for wittiest my senior year?
In reality, I would've like to learn to play the piano. I could see myself now, sitting in a smoky bar, playing some lonesome tune, and this lovely lady comes to the piano and asks, "Play Misty for Me."
Only she's not a lady...   With my luck, who knows?
My mom has said she once thought about trying piano, but she love riding horses instead. She owns and shows registered Tennessee Walking Horses.
I do not play a musical instrument, but I am a member of the First Baptist Church choir in Mendenhall,Ms.

I played the piano in college. I've always known how to read sheet music (from my years in choir in school: fifth, ninth, and twelfth grades). On my first day of piano lessons, my teacher was like, "Let's turn to page 1..." I'm playing everything from page 1 to 67...I taught myself the first four or five chapters of the book. He was like, "You already know how to read music?" I'm like, "Yessir, I taught myself how to play all this other stuff too."
I had to quit piano due to lack of time: I was going to school full time while holding down two jobs. I want to go back to playing again. I had so much fun learning! Does anyone around here do lessons? Just curious...
My sister plays the electric guitar by ear...she taking guitar lessons at UWA too. She's really good!

I voted none; however, Mama made me take two years of piano. I did learn how to "read" music. My piano teacher said that I would be happier doing something else. She was right! :D

My boss gave me a fancy harmonica. He knows I wanna learn. So far, havent tried tootin it. Having problems putting any instrument of my bosses near my mouth.
My ex confiscated and pawned my beautiful mandolin. I only played a bit at the time. I would love to play the mandolin and the dulcimer.
Tho I dearly love my rock music, I yearn to play bluegrass.
Anyhow. I play nuttin.

HA!  Ranger as "The Wedding Singer". For real. I played the trumpet all through Jr. high and high school, took piano lessons as a kid to keep me off the street. My dad (RIP Pops) was very good on several instruments like the piano, violin, squeeze box, and best of all the harmonica.

Hey! this sounds like we're talking about starting the Demopolis symphony! There have already been enough D'Live addicts to respond that can play "a little" and every year, DHS band members graduate and I'm sure they would like to stay envolved. Mike Grayson could conduct the group. He played in Chevy 6 years ago.

I was in the band for 8 years and played the trumpet. I Have had 2 brain surgeries since then and even though I did lose a good bit of my memory and had to re-learn alot of things, the trumpet is one thing that I didn`t have to re-learn.I actually remembered how to play it.
I have played several times at my church.
My drs say that it is like therapy to me,and I really enjoy doing it!
I feel that the Lord wants me to use it as a way to witness to others,so that is what I do.I try and practice several times a week because I have always heard that if you are blessed with something that you must use it to keep from losing it so that is what I am doing!
