The Mayor who proclaimed all during her campaign to be the “Full Time” candidate actually believed the hype after getting elected. For the last 2 years Mayor Cecil Williamson has been receiving free health insurance; courtesy of the tax payers of Demopolis. The problem with that, of course, being the Mayor is technically a part time position, and not eligible for paid health insurance. The “error”, caught by an independent auditor, has been corrected.
Williamson has claimed ignorance in this case. She stated to the Gazette that someone, whom she couldn’t recall, gave her the application when she first started. After 2 years, she still didn’t know she wasn’t supposed to get health insurance (even though as Mayor she has to sign every check written). In typical City Hall fashion, the Mayor was allowed to simply pay the money owed, and the matter considered “closed”. How much was owed? The Mayor & Council refuse to say.
IMO, I feel there needs to be a full investigation. I don’t think they should just take the word of the Mayor that she just didn’t know. This was 2 YEARS of “not knowing”—and would have been even longer had there not been the independent audit. Just because it happens in City Hall doesn’t mean they are exempt from the law; and ignorance of the law isn’t a valid defense.

Well, from what I can tell the AVERAGE annual cost of health insurance runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000-$6,000 for an individual, and around $11,000 for a family. So at best the back pay on two years should run around $10,000. This is purely speculation though.

I wonder if that "someone" could be the former City Clerk whom is no longer employed?

Taylor was fired before ever even working a day with the Mayor. Unless she handed her the application while being escorted out the door by the police, I would say no.
Williamson has reported paid the amount back in full (I assume, since they consider it closed now). They just won't say how much.

Same old same ol in City Hall. Pay it back and everything's okay. Next time I get in a financial bind, I think I will go stick up City Hall. When I get past my financial crisis, i will return the money, apologize for sticking them up, and call it even. Hell, I won't even be required to pay interest on the money I "borrow"!
