I happened to be looking at the game section today while I was at Walmart, and saw that this was for sale:

Final Fantasy VII $49.99.
Yeah -- Final Fantasy XII for sale at Walmart 2 days before it's official release! (October 31, 2006) -- This Wednesday.
A friend told me about it and I had to go see for myself so I just got back, and there it was... the yellow tag under it says FF VII, but the game in that slot was FF XII. Same case as the one shown on the gamestop website and the barnesandnoble.com website.

What will happen to them? I've seen them accidentally put out a movie that wasn't suppose to be released until Tues & nothin happened...

Heh. I just tabbed out of replaying FF VIII to see this thread. (Off the original CDs! Not a pirate. :p)
Squaresoft are kinda weird when it comes to FF copyrights.
I guess they figure once you're on your 20somethingth sequel, it's a bit pointless to bother.
I doubt they'll say anything much to Wal-Mart.
It's obviously a stocking error...and too big a chain for them to do/gripe much anyway.

It was cool though to get the game 3 days early!

Walmart could get in trouble for that. When I worked in electronics, there were several times where I had to pull stuff that was put out too quick. The register should tag is as "No Sell Allowed". Rather it did or not...that's for them to figure out.

I guess whoever stocked could have gotten shipment date & sale date mixed up?
I dunnno... but I've been waiting for this game for a LONG time. I pre-ordered it from Gamestop in May or June. So I'll be there around 8:30 tomorrow mornin' to get it. It was a friend of mine who got it on Sunday. But I just watched the intro. Which -- you could have seen that on the demo that went out a long time ago anyway. I refused to watch game play / etc -- plus I got the Collector's Edition since I pre-ordered. So mine will be better anyway.
EDIT:
Found my receipt. preordered at gamestop here on 7/29/06. I heard that Gamestop is opening up at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning for the release of the game. I'll be there around 8 or 8:30 to pick my 2 copies up.

The boxes have "Do not sell before this date xx/xx/xx" prominently displayed on the outside of the boxes. Someone must not have been paying attention.

Well... they're not really sequels... each one is different than the other -- the stories don't build on each other really, though there are reocurring things throughout them.... one of the most noticeable is the music and the chocobos lol. X was the only one with the sequel -- X-II. XI was online, and then XII is the first release in a long time in the FF game series.
Btw, X is my favorite. took me around 90 hrs of playign time to beat it and I finished most of the sidegames / etc.

I too have seen them have a CD for sale a day or two before the "official" release date. I can't see anyone doing anything about it.

Anyone else but me pick it up today?
Sale at Circuit City for $37.99.
First time I spent 5 consecutive hours on a game in about 2 years.
i'm at 26 hours on FFVII, but everyone says that it is absolutely amazing, so i guess i'll have to get it :)

Yeah it's really cool.
I pre-ordered so.. I got the collector's edition. I'm at 2 hrs... just no time at all because of all this work. I did defeat the killer tomato. It's completely different than most of the FF's -- the battle system. I was a fan of X's battle system and I liked X-II's also, but this one is cool.... you can just get into a LOT of trouble quick when there are a lot of enemies in an area....
The Collector's Guide has an Art Book that's amazing... it's really cool. Statpat told me he only got 4 in.... either way I'm glad I got it. Been waiting for MONTHs.

Where did you get VII from? I need 2 copies... not greatest hits... the originals. Also with original box (i understand if it's not in the best of shape) and the booklet that comes inside... I believe VII was a 3 CD game.
Having difficulty finding it.

StatPat, don't be going and kicking the Wal-Mart Manager's @$$ now! He probably didn't know his employees released the game early. If you have it in GameStop, go ahead and put yours out, too. Get all the business you can!

Stickman -- i don't think you understand the severity of this situation? Final Fantasy is serious $hit!
people have been waiting for this game.. (FF XII) for almost 5 years. that's how long it's "been in production".

anyone playing? current status?
no spoilers please... i haven't had much time to play, i've only got 8 hrs of playtime, level 7, only 1 hunt kill, not far at all as far as story progression.
But I Like The Game A LOT.
I like the new battle system... things happen a lot faster in this one.
