I met with a friend the other day who graduated from DA in 1999. Our conversation of course turned to "old times" and where people are now.

Anyone who graduated from DA or DHS in 1998, 1999, or 2000 hang around the site? I've noticed a few of you, but none from my class in particular!

We have no "new times" forum. This is the correct forum for Classmates, reunions, meeting folks, etc.

I personally loved Ms. Kayte. Of course, I was an antagonistic little know it all and she was too, so we really hit it off well. I loved being able to argue about literature with a teacher...one of the best experiences of my high school years was having Ms. Melton and Ms. Stritzinger for English teachers. I think that's why I ended up majoring in English in undergrad. The other choice was physics (bad physics...naughty physics).

uwa_amanda
05-12-2005, 08:32 AM
After all of the English classes I ever took, I decided that once I hit college, an English major was WAY out of the question. That explains partly why I have a Business degree. I am going for my Master's in the near future.

I will have to say that some teachers are old hags and i hate to disagree with teach 11 some teachers do fail students. As a freshmen at DHS i had an English teacher that failed some of my classmates and passed others. He shall remain nameless but he truly was a horrible teacher. If he liked you well you passed. If he didnt like you well you failed. Of course didnt hurt that we gave him much hell but that is no reason to fail a student if that student made the grades.

teach11
05-12-2005, 11:32 AM
The teacher mentioned by name in this thread did not "fail" her students. They either didn't do the work, didn't show desire and effort to remediate, or refused to participate because they didn't like her. None of these actions are the result of "old hag-ness." I speak from both sides of the classroom--she taught me English (and we had our share of differences), and now I teach English in a high school classroom.

By the way, lostnny, to get back on topic, I taught you at DA.

Statpat here Class of 1996... Man where has the time gone... almost ten years ago.... my goodness...

I use to have a love-hate relationship with Mrs. Melton... I can remember teaching her how to use the computer... too sad....

demopolite

Teach11 is right. If you are doing A work, there's no way that a teacher can fail you, now is there.

Pat, I thought you were younger than that!!!!

As for scary teachers, I have only two words: Ms. Mays. The ONLY teacher I NEVER talked back to (probably because I was afraid she would behead me on the playground if I did :D) A close second was Ms. Johnson, and third would be Ms. Melton. But I loved them all because they didn't take any lip from their students. You knew that it was THEIR classroom, not yours.

lost_n_ny
05-12-2005, 14:47 PM
Well Teach11 now that I know who you are Hello first and foremost and secondly you are right that students fail themselves when they dont do what they are supposed to but this certain teacher from day one gave me complete hell and never gave me a chance. so yes it was somewhat my fault and hers also for stereotyping me from one incident alone.

teach11
05-12-2005, 14:56 PM
The "warnings" between students already mentioned in this post also contribute to some "stereotyping" of teachers by students, and that stereotyping occurs from hearsay, not even "one incident." So, let's just agree that the cycle works both ways. However, to quote Mrs. Melton, many students would be happier and more successful in school if they would learn to "play the game."
By the way, lostnny, I'm glad to hear you are happily married with a healthy baby. The last time I heard of you other than this website was on 94.1 in a phone sham on your poor mom. That was you, wasn't it?

I graduated in 1996 and there were some teachers that were horrible, but some were excellent. My favorite was Coach Sprinkle I think with Mr. Barlow and Mrs. Stritzinger coming in close behind.

Those were the "Good Old Days". I hope my children get to experience Coach Sprinkle. I remember more of what he said than any other teacher.

I have to laugh when I read this. Mrs. Mays is my mother and she was the toughest teacher I ever had. She's also the only teacher that ever paddled me. And she paddled me twice. Funny thing is, I didn't realize until I was in my 30's that she's a marshmallow inside. She would never have let her students know it, tho.

But the one treacher that stands out in my head was Ms Crawford, i am sure that alot of people remember her. She was our 6th grade Social Studies teacher and she would write the answers on the board to the test and not even know it..

The one I didn't like was Mrs. Griffin - she scared me.Teach11 is right. If you are doing A work, there's no way that a teacher can fail you, now is there.
