Car Smashes into Athens Church as Driver Reaches for Cell Phone
Athens (AP) - An Athens woman, who lost control of her car while reaching for a cell phone, crashed into the side of a church, knocking a huge hole in the stone-and-concrete wall but miraculously causing no serious injuries.
Police said 40-year-old Joanne Brown plowed into Lindsay Lane Baptist Church at noon yesterday after narrowly missing two other motorists and a man trimming the grounds of the church.
Firefighters had to cut off the back top of the car to extract Brown. She was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital, where she was treated and released.
According to witnesses, Brown was reaching for her ringing cell phone when she looked up and realized she was about to hit a truck head-on. Sgt. Frank Murphy said that when she swerved to miss the truck, she overcorrected and crossed a ditch, drove through a grassy median in the church parking lot, then crossed the lot's exit lane and smashed into the 9-inch-thick wall.
