PBS & NPR funding cut

February 5, 2007
Bush Proposes Steep Cut to PBS Funding
By Ira Teinowitz
from TV Week.com
http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=11508
================================================== ========

President Bush is reopening the fight over government support of public television, unveiling a 2007 government fiscal year budget that would cut federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting by nearly 25 percent.

There was some confusion on how to tally the exact cut, but public TV and congressional sources said at least $114 million of the $460 million CPB budget for the fiscal year that starts in October would be cut. The Association of Public Television Stations said the total impact could be $145 million when cuts in related programs are added, including a program to upgrade radio station satellite facilities.

"It's more of the same," said John Lawson, president and CEO of the Association of Public Television Stations, noting previous requests to cut funding for public TV, most of which were overturned by Congress.

U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's telecom panel, ripped the cuts.

"In a 24-7 television world with content often inappropriate for young children, the public broadcasting system represents an oasis of quality, child-oriented educational programming," he said. "We owe America's children and their parents this free, over-the-air resource."

A CPB analysis of the budget said the cuts include the $50 million already appropriated by Congress for next year, elimination of additional funding for digital conversion of public TV stations and a slight decrease in the Ready to Learn program. In addition to the cuts, the traditional advance funding for future years' programs would disappear, potentially making it harder for public stations to commit to future TV programming.

A spokeswoman for PBS said that the cuts would be "disastrous" for public TV stations.

"For PBS, it could mean the end of our ability to support some of the most treasured educational children's series and primetime icons to which CPB funding contributes," said Lea Sloan, VP-communications.

She said the lack of advanced funding would "cripple PBS' ability to support programs that take years to develop."

"We are hopeful that Congress will recognize the unique value public stations offer to their communities in everything from advancing literacy, math and science skills among children to providing rich, diverse cultural arts as well as news and public affairs programming to people of all ages," she said.

---------------

I also hope Congress will recognize how valuable stations like PBS and NPR are to so many people. I know personally that NPR does a very good job at raising money themselves, but even then they need some funding. I hope Bush doesn't approve this, but it seems as though, to him, it's a good idea. ... ?

Just think! you can sit your kids in front of MTV instead of Sesame Street. Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears and "The Real World" instead of counting, reading, and learning all the diverse things PBS has to offer. And no NPR... where would I be?

GOOD! HOORAY! Budget has to be cut. And I say it's about time.

Psalms 91:1-2
"He who dwells in he secret place of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say
of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in
Him I will trust."

Re: PBS & NPR funding cut

Bush's budget is dead in the water anyway. There's a different Congress in town now, thankfully. This is just more meaningless pandering to his bankrupt base.

I hope you are right

I would miss some NPR.

What do you have against PBS & NPR debby?

I thought my entire generation (which would include your daughter) and MANY people on this site, were raised on programs like Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, etc....

I think those shows were much better than Pokemon, Barney, Tellytubbies, and some of the crazy 2-5 year old programming today. From what I've seen, the programs look like they were created by people heavy on ACID! little baby faces spliced into images of the sun, laughing at strange looking creatures that hop around and can't even speak English! I have no idea how most of this children's programing can be considered educational. At least the Muppet's were entertaining and had some character!

And NPR has great affiliates. Where else can you find classical, and bluegrass, and information that NPR provides on any other FM station around here?

Re: PBS & NPR funding cut

PBS offers some terrific programming, such as Frontline, American Masters and other related programming. I grew up on Sesame Street, Mister Rogers and The Electric Company (I still remember Rita Moreno opening the show saying heyyy you guyyys..) Morgan Freeman was also on that show as well.
Garrison Keillior's show on Public Radio is also a treat.
Ocasionally, Mississippi Public Broadcasting (TV) has Mississippi Roads and a show about writers called, what else...Writers.
Sure, budgets have to be cut, but I hope PBS, both TV and radio can still keep many of the great shows they've offered for years. My grandmother loves watching Lawrence Welk and Keeping Up Appearances.

Re: PBS & NPR funding cut

There are so many good programs on NPR, from Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, to CarTalk and Hey, What Do You Know. Saturday's are my favorite for NPR. The night ends with awesome bluegrass. I think it's a bad idea to start cutting the budgets of much-needed public broadcasting. I'm wondering if anybody could get a pie-chart of the budget during Clinton's term and the pie-chart during Bush's term and compare the two. I bet that there would be far more money to spend on public broadcasting if they manufactured weapons on the side. Or better yet, they could become a subsidiary of Halliburton. They'd make tons of money then.
