A minimun wage increase sounds good, but not a good thing to do right now. Do all you older people remember when a teenager could get a job working after school? It may not have paid much but the skill factor was not that high. Bagging groceries, pumping gas, flipping burgers, or just cleaning up in businesses. Most of those type of jobs are gone. Many people got their first taste of the real world by working at places like McDonald's. McDonald's don't pay much because all the skills for MOST of their tasks can be taught in a couple of hours or so. Sure, many rise up to manage or even own a location, but most go on to bigger and better jobs. When the minimun wage goes up, businesses just cut back on hiring, or even eliminating some workers. Like the oldman said, the remaining crew works harder for a smaller increase in pay. Basic Economics 101. The truth is most people are paid above the minimun wage. An increase in MW also affects the people who are usually skilled workers. Less money for their raises. Strange there is not a maximun wage set. Why should a CEO be paid tens of millions of dollars each year even when the business is loosing money? Does he/she get fired or as the say now "be downsized"? No. It will be the people who are on the bottom rung of the ladder. Most businesses pay minimun wage to entry level employees. If people want to earn more, then they should improve their skills in order to move up. Some jobs, even many locally, will always remain minimun wage.
