Menu Foods Income Fund Announces Precautionary Dog and Cat Food Recall
Menu Foods Income Fund (the "Fund") (TSX:MEW.UN) today announced the precautionary recall of a portion of the dog and cat food it manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are contract-manufactured for some national brands.
Over the past several days, the Fund has received feedback in the United States (none in Canada) raising concerns about pet food manufactured since early December, and its impact on the renal health of the pets consuming the products. Shortly after receipt of the first complaint, the Fund initiated a substantial battery of technical tests, conducted by both internal and external specialists, but has failed to identify any issues with the products in question. The Fund has, however, discovered that timing of the production associated with these complaints, coincides with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier. The Fund stopped using this ingredient shortly after this discovery and production since then has been undertaken using ingredients from another source.

Thanks for the web address! My sister had to have her cat put to sleep Friday due to kidney failure which we though came with his age since he was 12, but the vet called her today and mentioned the recall and come to find out "TAZ" had been eating the recalled cat food for the last 10 months!
Now she has to take the dogs to be tested because they would clean the cats bowl and eat what he didn't!
Before long it's not going to be safe for pets or humans to eat anything!
I don't ever remember as many recalls on foods as we have had in the last year!

I agree completely. These recalls are just crazy - are there not tests that are performed prior to shipping the food products to confirm safety? Something is really going on with quality control and standards to let this many things through that end up being recalled after causing illness and death.
What are you going to do today, Napoleon?
Whatever I feel like I want to do! Gosh!

I am so sorry that your sister had to have her cat put down, 4Fuqua. I'm sure that knowing that it may have been caused by the cat food does not make it any easier. Scary stuff happening with our foods and animal foods.....
I've just put all my dogs on Eagle Pack (the one for large & giant breeds) and could not be happier. It's a little more expensive than what I can pick up at Walmart but they're not having any more digestive problems since changing.
If my calculations are correct
SLINKY + ESCALATOR = EVERLASTING FUN

Are you pleased w/ the Eagle Pack? I wanted to start my dog on it, but it is difficult to obtain around here & I really didn't want to mail order it. I chose Science Diet Sensitive Skin formula. It's a quality food & easily purchased at the local vet. My dog, Harley, loves it.

I use Science Diet also for small dogs.....You can also get that at Clyde's People.
I get so worried everytime I hear of a recall pertaining to my animals~it can be scary that you are shoving this stuff down their little throats and could be killing them at the same time....This may seem a little iratic but I miss the news alot of times and I'm afraid I might miss one of these numerous recalls they have (don't worry I'm not pacing the front yard about it or anything)
I have one on ALPO and the new puppy on Purina One! Both have been great foods! My sister has a new Weimeraner (sp) puppy who's been on Iams, which is one on the list of 100!! She was very upset when I told her about the recall yesterday!

I cant even begin to tell you how pleased I am with this food. Like I said, they have not had the digestive problems they all had on the other foods and, they actually eat ALL of their food instead of "picking" at it during the day. This is also one of the only foods that has research to back it up for large breed puppies and dogs.

I choose Eagle because all products are made with human grade/organic ingredients,a multi-protein source, not grain based, yogurt cultures (probiotics) digestive enzymes, prebiotics, glucosamine HCL for joint support, high quality sequestered minerals which are critical for proper growth and no bone diseases, no ethoxiquin, no BHA,BHT, only naturally preservative, vitamin C and yucca and balanced Omega 6:3 fatty acids. This is the ONLY dog foods ever tested on giant breeds and it was done on several litters before it became available to the public. It has the longest track record for giant breeds of any food on the market. I directed the feed trials on this food 18 years ago as well as the Large and Giant Puppy food feed trials in 2002 so I know these foods work.
They also have a testimonial page on their site that I found very helpful and some of them address sensitive skin issues.
The cheapest place to purchase that I've found so far is Amazon.com but I continually look for a better price each time I order. Im also able to get this locally but it's more expensive (even with shipping from Amazon).
I have read good and bad stuff about Science Diet (do a google of science diet ingredients) but most, if not all I've read about Eagle Pack has been positive. I guess it's just what works for you and your pet.
