Wow.....lots of ads on here

Last time I remember coming here there weren't so many but wow have they grown. I thought that was what donating was for? Who hosts this?

Well the site has grown tremendously and has had to be moved to a much more expensive host to accommodate our traffic. Speaking of donating though, have you donated? It's costing the admins almost $300 a month to keep this site going and that's not even counting all the hours they put in to adding new features or general maintenance.

I honestly don't think the ads are excessive. At first I noticed them alot more. Now they rarely catch my eye. I know I should be clicking on them. I would rather donate what I can. Sorry!

No I have not donated nor do I intend to, it's a great site don't get me wrong. But I refuse to pay for a website unless im running it. and besides I have my own forum, that has one ad towards the top that is barely noticable, what could they possibly be using that would cause more traffic to have more ads? Please don't get me wrong and flame me though, its a great site, i love coming here. I was just curious as to why there was an increase in ads.

Back when we were getting 4000-5000 page views a day we could host the site on a cheap shared server without much problem. When you average 20,000 to 30,000 page views a day (views, not hits) you have to have a dedicated server to host it. It costs money. When the donations reach the monthly target we turn off the ads.

What's your site and what kind of traffic do you get?

eh im not going to lie, its a site for my video game clan so it isn't very big or have many hits but I signed up at www.jcink.com he hosts it for free (just a small ad at the top) i assume no matter how many hits you get

edit: I have seen many sites he hosts, with tons of users and tons of hits with no extra ads

The diffrence is not the hits, thats nothing. Its the tremendous stress that constant usage of the database puts on the server. We have literally been kicked off several "cheap" hosting servers because they could not handle the load we generate. The only option we had was going to a dedicated server, period. Which costs. If all we had was static pages or a very simple forum with little features, then there would be no issues. Right now we are just trying to help take pressure off of the donators by supplementing it with money from adsense. Goto just about ANY semi-popular forum site and you will see they do the same thing, especially when its not run as a business (which we don't).

So, if you know of any other ideas, let us know. Otherwise, The bill is due each month, so you can either donate or click an ad. Either way, we are grateful.

Oh, and to address your original post, we've NEVER had ads prior to turning on adsense, so I'm not sure where you remember seeing any before.
