Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

Just wanted to post, as I deal with this regularly.

I'd say just under half of Marengo County has access to broadband internet. If anyone calls AT&T now, the person on the phone will tell you DSL will be in your area by the end of the year. Talk to any AT&T tech (or anyone else in the know) and this is not the case. All new DSL rollouts have been put on hold, likely caused by the restructuring due to the merger.

Bottom line, they get you off the phone by saying it will be available by the end of the year, regardless of where you are in the state, while the guys that actually set up the DSLAM are not setting up any new DSLAMs.

DSL? What is that? lol! I can't wait until it hits the country but I have finally come to terms that I will be on dial - up for the rest of my life. This is a good topic for "vegas" to jump on.

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

When I first contacted them I was told that it was not available in my area and that they would send me an email when it was ready. Then a couple of days later I saw an advertisement thru my satelite company to check and see if DSL was available in my area so I did and guess what it was. AT&T wouldn't tell me it was but DirecTV did. I've had DSL for several months now and I love it....Never thought it would happen to my section of Gallion.

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

I had already jumped on it while you were posting Rockingtenn. AT&T stated last year that every AT&T customer would be provided some type of DSL service by 2008. This does not neccessarily mean landline DSL. They also offer wireless through AT&T Wireless and satelite through Direct TV. We knew there was no way to get landline DSL to the entire network by 2008 and there would be some fine print. And I'm one of the guys that sets up the DSLAMs, and you're right, we're not putting any in right now....Anywhere. No one in upper management can give a good explanation of this problem.

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

I just learned that where we are we are offered "high speed dial up". Anyone know anything about that? Is it worth the extra money to pay for it? DSL is not an option on Hell's Half Acre.

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

I know that AT&T offers AT&T Accelerator for free which they claim it runs 5 times faster than normal dail-up. You may notice a small difference when it is first installed but eventually you may start noticing slower loads. All it does is creates a seperate folder to dump cookies from sites you have visited. Eventually it will be overloaded and start slowing your service down again. As far as anyone else's service with so called fast dail-up, I've heard of some folks that have tried it but were very unsatisfied.

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

AT&T accelerator is a local proxy server, nothing more. Not a bad thing, but most folk's PC's are running pretty slow to start with, adding another service just makes it worse.

I think Earthlink is the one that has a compression system set up. It compresses the images on the server side so you actually download less data, thus the page loads a bit quicker. The downside to this method is any image downloaded (buttons, pics, etc) is lower quality, often looks much worse.

Just for clarity, lets call it what it is, DSL is broadband over phone lines, everything else is its own. Broadband over satellite is not DSL. DSL is the method used to serve internet over phone lines, there is no such beast as wireless DSL.

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

Hi all-new member here (previous lurker) and this is my first post. If I am off topic please be patient while I learn! I have a question about AT&T's DSL. I do have this service and it is great. AT&T called me several weeks ago and talked me into going to DSL 3.0-I had previously fast access dsl. It is just $5 more a month but I am not seeing a huge change in the speed. I thought it would be faster than it is yet when I check my speed it shows at 2.9. they also explained I would get a static ip address at no extra cost but the ip they emailed me and the ip address on my computer are different. What's up with that. Is there just not a huge speed difference in fast access dsl and 3.0? I'm tempted to call them and go back to fast access and save that $60.00 per year! What do ya'll think? Thanks gem

Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year

Call it what you will, DSL or broadband, most people only know high speed as being called DSL. It's just a term that people can relate to more. So to correctly state the fact, AT&T offers broadband service through DSL, Wireless, and Satelite. AT&T stated they would have some type of broadband service to all of their customers by 2008. They have now fullfilled their end of the bargain its sad to say. Wireless and satelite costs more than DSL but they have never said they will provide everyone with the same cost, so if you want it you must pay for it.

After the merger was announced all sites for DSL were "capped" by Bellsouth. This means that there would not be any money spent on these sites. In the Spring AT&T uncapped all sites but there has still been no provisioning for DSL. AT&T has begun implementing their next "big thing" in the major markets. So the money that could be spent on equipment to offer DSL in rural markets is being spent on this new service. AT&T calls it "UVERSE", a service that provides phone, broadband, and tv on demand. Upper management will tell you that they don't know why DSL is not being put into place in this area or that it will be coming soon. The fact of the matter is why you would pay several thousand dollars to install DSL equipment across the network and then turn around a year or two later and pay several more thousand dollars to upgrade or even replace that equipment to operate UVERSE. We are working very hard installing more and more fiber optic cable getting everything ready for the future of the company. Just to let you know exactly how much fiber, you can only have about 1 mile of copper between your home or business and the main equipment.

Although it will take a long time to have everyone ready for this service I don't think anyone will be disappointed once it's here. But one thing you need to note also, the telephone industry is just like the computer industry. Todays greatest thing will be replaced with an all new greatest thing tomorrow.
