Geocaching

I found this article in my Southern Living and thought I would share it with everyone. If you are looking for a way to explore and use technology at the same time than this is for you. It works like this: go to the web site www.geocaching.com and type in a country, state, or zip code and it takes you to alot of waterproof caches posted by people called "cachers". I did this already by typing in Dmops zip code and it pulled up serveral. There were ppl that were here for a COTR that looked and found those. It is also educational. In this story it tells of one box that had plastic insects and an essay about natures marvels. Ok I know I might be showing my dorky side but am I the only one that thinks this is cool?

Re: Hidden Treasures

This is actually pretty fun. I used to do this is my spare time a few years back when living in AR. I own one of those small Garmin GPS handheld units and used to visit that website often. Don't know if the rules are the same now but then you were supposed to take something (ie. a Hot Wheels car or something of the sort) and take one thing out of the cache and replace it with something you brought. Then log back onto the website and list what you took and what you replaced it with as "proof" you actually found the cache. Sometimes, on the harder ones to find, people actually placed money inside the caches! I actually found like 4 or 5 around south and central AR, but this was like 4 or 5 years ago. It was fun though! Thanks for the post!

If guns kill people, then pencils are to blame for all of my spelling errors.

Re: Geocaching

I can't believe I missed this thread back in December when it was originally posted. My family and I love geocaching, and there are hundreds of caches hidden within an hour's drive of us in west alabama. If anyone is interested in getting into caching, I'd be glad to advise on GPS units, as I recently did some comparison shopping with geocaching in mind. There is going to be a geocaching event at Mound State Park in June that should be fun - I can give details to anyone who's interested.

Is anyone else into geocaching?

Re: Geocaching

I've found a few places around here to go, but have never done this.

Does the GPS on the cell phones work ok for this??

I know a trooper near Prattville who does this and found lots of sites around town there, too.

RoadstarB & I thought this would be fun on the motorcycles, but havent got a chance to do this yet.

Re: Geocaching

This is such a fun activity! My daughter and I have been to Demopolis searching for the items. We searched all over around Napoleon's and never did find that little goodie. We have talked about getting a GPS to help us out in our adventures.

You can use a GPS enabled phone, but to download cache locations you will need to download and subscribe to the Geocache Navigator application. If you have a GPS enabled mobile phone on Sprint, Nextel, Boost or Southern Linc networks, or a BlackBerry smartphone with built-in GPS, you can get The Geocache Navigator application for $5.99 per month on Sprint and SouthernLINC phones, and $6.99 per month on Nextel and Boost Mobile phones.

A free ad-supported version of Geocache Navigator is now available for Nokia N95, Nokia N82 and Nokia 6110 Navigator phones.

http://www.geocachenavigator.com/

OR, you can go to www.geocaching.com, join for free, and manually enter the coordinates for the cache you are looking for. Kind of a drag.

Garmin makes some great handheld GPS units for geocaching, starting at around $100.
