Sugar Kitties

Sadly, the white cat has been diagnosed with feline diabetes (deaf and diabetic...poor baby just didn't draw a good hand!)

I've found some great informational sites on the web, but I was wondering whether anyone here had a diabetic cat and wanted to share personal stories about diet, insulin, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Sugar Kitties

Not a diabetic cat, but I do have a friend that had a diabetic dog. The strange thing was, he was also a diabetic. They had to really watch what he ate and give him insulin shots daily. He lived with it for many years but finally old age and a multitude of other health problems took his life.

Re: Sugar Kitties

He's still at the vet's office today and probably won't come home until at least tomorrow. His blood glucose was around 400 when they tested him two days ago (renal failure usually begins at 320), but it's now down to a "regulated" level. They are still trying to figure out the insulin dose so that I can learn to give the injections tomorrow and keep him on injections until he goes back to the vet in 2-3 weeks. He's not eating well, but I think that it's because of the stress more than the illness....he was eating lots of Christmas kittie treats before the holidays.

Re: Sugar Kitties

Wow, it's hard enough just to keep up with human illnesses.....I had no idea that cats or animals in general, were susceptible to diabetes. I cant imagine having to give my cat or my dogs a shot everyday but, you do what you have to do for the furry babies.

Good luck to you and to your White Cat.

Re: Sugar Kitties

I'm sorry about your very pretty kitty. I did a kitty myspace for my cat ( yep I did..I'm silly like that ) on Catster. I searched the forums and found this.

Warning : It's a silly site but so informative. I hope it's helpful!

Re: Sugar Kitties

UPDATE: We're doing well on 6 units of insulin twice a day. He is gaining weight (good since he had lost so much), and we go in tomorrow for a check-up and will ask questions about changing food at that time.

Re: Sugar Kitties

Good to hear that your kitty is doing better and gaining weight back...bless it's heart, sounded like he'd been through the wringer.

Re: Sugar Kitties

Up to 8 units...and we're below renal threshold! Blood glucose level of 285 at last check.

We're discussing a switch to wet food from dry food because the high carbohydrates and lack of moisture in dry food have been linked to both diabetes and urinary tract problems in cats. The Siamese had to be treated for a urinary tract infection this weekend.

Anyone got any thoughts on wet vs. dry or any experience with switching a cat from dry to wet food?

Re: Sugar Kitties

I've been worried about your cat. That link I put in this thread did say that dry food is linked to diabetes and I did not know that. So I'm glad for your thread. I learned something. I always leave dry food ( Science Diet ) out for my cat and I feed him a small can of Fancy Feast every 2 or 3 days. He doesn't eat all of it at once. He grazes over it.
