We have a precious Shih Tzu who is a year and a half. (I hide him when Bamassee is in town, becoz she will steal him, lol) Well to get to the point and this is something I don't know much about but MC just took him to the vet because for the last 5 days he hasn't been himself. He won't play or get excited about anything which is NOT his nature as he loves to play more than anything. Well, now to explain what the vet said. First let me give a little background. We have NEVER had a small dog and he is always chewing and barking at his behind. Everytime we take him to the vet they squeeze his anal glands. (Yeah, had to go there to get to the point) In all of my years of having dogs as a child, I have never heard this in my life. Last week, I had to take him in when MC was busy and yet again they said his anal glands were infected and gave him an antibiotic shot. It's only been about 10 days since I took him. MC again took him today because like I was explaining a few lines up we were really concerned and worried. Again, the vet said he had a fever this time and his anal glands were EXTREMELY full. Again, they expressed them and gave him another shot. Has anyone ever had a issue like this with your dogs? We are now taking him at least every 3 weeks to have them expressed because he gets to where he can't function at all. Today was the worst and that is why MC took him. HELPPPPP!!!!!

My first question is what vet are you taking him to!? I own a small dog too and she only has to get it done once a year. She is a little overdue right now and you can tell. You should be able to smell an odor coming from the backside.

Exercise helps to keep them cleaned out. My Cocker Spaniel gets them from time to time and that is the treatment she gets.

We use the vet here in town. We have never smelled the odor either. (ewwww, gross, lol)

I am thinking about taking little Jasper to the Greensboro vet. It will be a pain, but I agree with Laquittaf, I think it's time for a second opinion. Nothing against the Dr. Hill, but Jasper defiantly needs to be fixed.

MC & LTM56....I think Dr. Hill is sweet and is (was) very good with large animals, however, I think it would be in Jasper's best interest for you to take him to another Vet. The ones in Greensboro are great, as is the Vet in Livingston, at least that was my opinion. Give them a call and discuss your concerns.

Just guessing but, it sounds like they expressed his glands too often and it has resulted in an infection, not that I'm an expert but prior to moving to Demopolis, Gizmo never had his expressed and after, he only had them done once a year, if that often.

BTW, I still think he just wants to come live with Bamassee!!! ROFLMAO!!
