Goodbye HD DVD

Well it appears the battle for High Definition between Blu-Ray and HD DVD is over. It has been announced that HD DVD is being phased out and stores will start to "de-emphasize and in many cases, liquidate, HD DVD products". With Toshiba abandoning and stopping the making of the HD DVD Player has caused marketers to discount all remaining stock of HD DVD players. More than a million customers paid $300 to buy HD DVD players or $100 to get their Xbox to play HD DVD have pretty much wasted their money. But for those you who bought the HD DVD player, Toshiba is being a good sport and is offering a credit on their HD DVD players that are returned towards the purchase a Blu-Ray player
.
After doing some further reading, several major chain stores had decided to go exclusively with Blu-Ray. Stores such as Wal-Mart, Target and Blockbuster. Netflix will only purchase Blu-ray from this day forward and phase out HD DVD.

So for all of you waiting for this format war between HD DVD and Blu-Ray to be over, the time is here.

On a side note, For all of my Xbox 360 friends..........Well you now what I am about to say and sometimes the best words are those left unspoken.

Re: Goodbye HD DVD

I just bought the add on for the 360 and I love it. There will be a limited supply of movies on hd so I will try and get them all. I got the player and 6 movies for $80. I haven't seen a lot clearance sales on the movies though.

This is fairly new info, in one of the articles I posted it tells you some of the places already starting to have sales on them.

Re: Goodbye HD DVD

So now we're gonna have a big ole box of DVDs in our attic next to the box of VHS tapes!!

When does this change-over finalize??? When will they phase out the DVDs completely??

It'll take a while. Blue-Ray is to us now what DVD was to us when everyone had VHS and rental stores had slim to none DVD rentals.

Also, there is no point in buying a Blue-Ray or HD-DVD player unless you have a HDMI input on your television -- i.e. your tv is HD compatible. If you still have an old 19", 27" 32" "big-assed" (i.e. Cathode Ray Tube) television that has just a coaxial cable input and possibly a few RCA inputs (yellow, red, white-- the regular standard now) and maybe a S-Video input.... then having a blue-ray player will make no picture quality difference at all.

Keep your DVD players, keep your DVDs. They will continue to release new and old movies on regular DVD for years to come, I'm sure. The step up to blue-ray should come after you've gotten that new 1080 HD-TV plasma or LCD screen.

It will be a slow change -- entertainment is on the low end of the scale when you're looking at $4.00 a gallon gas.

Have no fear... your DVD DVD/divx player is still all good for at least another 4-5 years. But just like VHS and casette, regular DVDs will slowly phase out and Blue-ray will be affordable and the standard for everyone. Plus, the Blue Ray players (like the one I have on my Playstation 3) also plays any DVD you may have bought in the past -- some of them even have special hardware and software that "upgrades them" to better quality. But again, that all depends on your output source -- tv, monitor, projector, etc.

Keep buying those DVDs, and know that your collection will still be as valuable to you later as it is now. We're just slowly stepping into a new standard (that is "backwards compatible with your DVDs today) that will take years to take hold of the general public.

Re: Goodbye HD DVD

Yes, MMCD32 is right, the old DVD's will still be in use. This battle was betweetn HD DVD and Blu-Ray for High Definition Video. Just like he said Blu-Ray will pretty much mean nothing until you have a HDTV and using a HDMI cable.

Re: Goodbye HD DVD

I'm glad I hadn't gotten into the HD-DVD and Blue-Ray buying yet. I was waiting on this decision to play out. I think it was the right choice.

We now have a standard! woohoo
