What is the top Demopolis and/or Marengo news events of 2004? The State 4A Football Championship of both Demopolis and Sweet Water has to be in the top tier. Where does the election of Cecil Williamson rate? Is her election going to topped by her early mistakes, to include the blotched firing of the City Clerk, and the lawsuit that followed? How about the announcement of the new Wal-Mart Supercenter? Where will Andy Phillips hitting a home run at his first major league at bat with the New York Yankees place? McClain E-Z Pack closing? Opening of the educational center at the Sports-Plex? Members of the Linden Nation Guard unit deployment which will find them in Iraq in February? Linden Mayor Pat Vice brain and lung surgery?
These are not place in any certain order. What others do you want to add? What are your choices?

For Demopolis, the most significant event would probably be the election of Mayor Williamson. For Linden, it would probably be the illness of Mayor Vice.
For Marengo County, I believe that the most important news event was the ratification of the labor contract by the union at the Gulf States paper mill.
I say that these are the most important, for from them will flow a lot of other news, good or bad, that will affect Demopolis, Linden and Marengo County.

Let's add the completion of the Naheola bridge to this list. That's definitely a biggie!

How about the damage hurricane Ivan did to the county? We still have a lot of roofs with tarps on them and people displaced. It is about time for the local newspapers to come out with their top local news events of 2004. Let's come up with a list of about 15 to 20 local news events and then have some type of poll to compare with the local papers.

The ol' arrest of Goodloe would be a good one.

Beaten ;)
The death of Dr. Holifield would be considered I think. As far as top news story, I would vote for the football championships.
Other big news items are the securing of the grant for the riverwalk (and the ensuing fighting over how to build it) and the 1 cent sales tax increase on Marengo County.

Tough choice to decide the top local news events of 2004. We have had so many events that could be listed.
I believe the top 5 will be, not in any set order:
Hurricane Ivan damage to the area.
DHS wins State 4A Football Championship (along with Sweet Water)
Gulf States finally settles contract.
Cecil Williamson elected Mayor.
McClains E-Z Pack closes.
I believe these events affected the most people and the community as a whole.

Dr. Holifields death needs to take the place of McClains..

What about Wal-Mart SuperCenter.
I'm going to add a poll to this--vote for for your top 5 on the list (multi-vote poll). If I left off an event, I can add to it (so post it).

i know that the gulf states contract is a big deal, but yall cant blame the people that were voting on it, the scab head honchos wouldnt give those guys what they want, or need. they settled for alot less than i think they should have for the simple fact that they were tired of negotiating and not getting anywhere.

I'm not sure what they lost. They gave up Sunday pay, yet got a raise to cover the % of their salary it effected (when you facter in new overtime wages from the pay increase, more money is made without the Sunday pay). The 401K package the current employees have the option to take would give them more money in the long run (for newer employees) than the pension would.

I went to vote on the poll and I can't say that I can pick the top 5...I had them all marked and then kept reading and thought that it was impossible. I have to agree with the ones of you that said the death of Dr. Holifield would rank near the top though. And of course the deployment on the troops in Linden.

By all means enlighten us (and make a new thread)

It's tough deciding on which events were most important. I chose based on what I thought were the most "popular" news items in terms of public interest, opinion, and discussion.
What happens if there is a tie?
...Not sure?? ;) Results will be what they are. Our poll is designed to see what the public thinks the top stories are. Inevitably the Times (and other publications) will do their lists; which will be based on what they think were the top stories.
