Teacher Cuts???????

Front page of The Times is about teacher cuts in Dmop. HAS VICKERS LOST HIS MIND??????? He dismissed what I personally know are two of the greatest women involved in our school systems! Yancena Perry and Audrey Hamilton! Ms Perry is at EVERY function involving our schools in some capicity. If shes not raising money for the schools, she is their taking pictures and supporting our schools! WAKE UP VICKERS>>>>>ARE YOU GONNA DO ALL THIS???? I SERIOUSLY doubt it!!!!! As for Mrs Hamilton, she is a well traveled, well spoken effective leader of our high school students. She has had an exhibit displayed at BWWMH documenting her travels and is the type of teacher that students love because of her unique perpective on teaching! VICKERS HAS MADE A HUGE MISTAKE (in my opinion) and one that will come back to bite him!!!! As for the other dismissed personnel, I personally dont know them but I am sure they can probably be spoken for in the same manner!!!!!!!

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

You can actually thank the Legislature for forcing some of the smaller school systems like Demopolis City into pink slip status.

...and you can thank the AEA for creating the snafu in the legislature.

...and you can thank the teachers of Alabama in past times for submitting themselves to a closed-shop union like the AEA and basking in its benefits for years.

So it all eventually comes around full circle, doesn't it?

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

The larger school systems were going to lay off personnel anyway. Since January, Mobile County has been planning to lay off 500 total employees including teachers, teacher aides, bus drivers, lunchroom workers, janitors, secretaries, etc.

I imagine that smaller school systems (like Demopolis) will rehire all pink slipped employees due to the fact that most were working with bare minimum staffs as it is.

As for AEA, they have a monopoly on teacher liability insurance. Their rates are mere fractions of what other insurance carriers in Alabama charge for the same coverage. Most of us who are AEA members...don't want to be AEA members. Yet, we have to have the liability insurance.

You lawyers require us teachers to have that liability insurance.

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

If you had enough moral and political qualms about it, you'd pay the extra money. If you don't then you're in bed with the devil...and I don't feel sorry for you.

The AEA has done so much to screw this state up that I relish the thought of enough teachers getting laid off and pissed off enough to leave.

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

If I quit everything that I had moral and political qualms about...I'd be living in a tent out in the desert....and so would you. I still see people buying gasoline at Citgo stations despite the fact that they despise the President of Venezuela.

The money that I save on AEA liability insurance...I funnel toward many of their opponents...like ALFA who has also held up progress in this state by lobbying our Legislature in the opposite direction.

My greatest qualm is with the Legislature that allows the Hubbert-Reed combo to twist their arms without asking the rank and file members. The Legislature also has allowed the Hubbert-Reed combo to qualify for the DROP program for which neither is qualified.

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

You feel so strongly about it demopolite prehaps you should run for legislature and make some changes in Montgomery and elsewhere.
I'd be willing to bet Mr. Vickers is not happy about what he has to do. But he has a job to do and must.
What can we do call our Rep's and letem have it! Good luck on actually getting to chat one on one with either of them!

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

Personally I would be interested to know what the criteria were in choosing which personnel were dismissed. I noticed Ms Perry stated in the paper that her and Vickers had disagreed on a matter involving the PTA and their choice of funding playground equipment at US jones. She states that "I hope that was not the reason I was terminated." The report also says that had her contract been renewed she would have achieved her tenure thus ensuring her job could not be terminated without sufficient cause. Other school employees also expressed their astonishment at the fact that she was one of the ones pink slipped. I couldnt agree more!!!!

Re: Teacher Cuts???????

More than likely, huntingurl, DCS pink-slipped all non-tenured personnel. Legally, they can pink-slip tenured personnel if the BOE has an over-abundance of teachers with the same certification (ex: having 5 science teachers when only 4 are needed).

If I was let go for disagreeing with my superintendent...I'd stay out of a job. Last week, my superintendent and I sat down and laughed about how much we had disagreed; however, we both admitted that the kids were each other's focus. Two weeks ago, he admitted that I was closer on his educational wavelength plan than most of his principals. He knows that I fight for kids, and I know that he fights for kids. We just disagree about how to win for kids.
