Formatting a hard drive

I am getting ready to format my hard drive and it keeps telling me that I need to quit the disk utlities or another program that is using this drive. I don't know what to do at that point. I have nothing open except the formatting screen. Can you please tell me what I need to do b/c I need to get this done ASAP?

Re: Formatting a hard drive

You cannot format the C drive from inside Windows, if that is what you're talking about.
You need a boot disk. If you're talking about your computer I worked on, it should have come with a recovery disc as well as the Windows CD. Stick the recovery disc in and reboot, it should walk you through it from there.

Re: Formatting a hard drive

Stickman, I was not using a CD or anything. I went to my computer & format. Oldman, I put the recovery disk in there (the 1st one - there is 3 of them) and rebooted and nothing happened. Can I start up in DOS mode and do it from there?

Re: Formatting a hard drive

Basically, you need to find out which one of your disks has the Windows installation program on it. Boot up from that disk, go to the Windows directory on that disk, then type in format c: Like Oldman said, you cannot format the hard drive from within the C:\ drive.

Re: Formatting a hard drive

Okay...I will try that when I get home. The disk I put in I am pretty sure was not the one that had the windows installation thing on it. I have a Gateway that I am trying to reformat. I dont know what model or anything.

Re: Formatting a hard drive

If the computer is not booting from the Recovery disk then you need to check the boot sequence in the system BIOS. Normally you can get to the BIOS by tapping delete or F2 as the computer is booting up. Look for the boot order option and move the CDROM to the top of the list. When the PC reboots it should pop-up and ask if you would like to boot from the CD.

Re: Formatting a hard drive

Depends on the BIOS version. I don't remember what it is on your computer right off the top of my head. I may try to drop off a CD for you sometime today if I get the chance.

That would be great if you have time, Oldman. Otherwise, if it is okay, I may give you a call if I have any problems when I try to do this again.

Re: Formatting a hard drive

Some recovery disks will work inside Windows. Just try sticking the CD in the drive when you boot up Windows. It may walk you through the steps and reboot for you. Most new computers are like that. If that doesn't work then, yes you may need to check your BIOS settings to make sure that you're booting from the CD-Rom drive first. Then you have to do what Jeff and Glenn said.
