Unlimited internet a thing of the past?
I've been reading a lot lately about internet service providers wanting to limit usage on their subscribers. A few months ago Comcast said they were firing up a limited usage plan. Now I see Time Warner jumping into the fray. These are some pretty big ISPs and if they start doing this it probably won't be long before the rest follow suit.

They say it's only a small percent (5%) of the people that overuse bandwidth but I'll bet a much bigger percent exceed the proposed bandwidth limits on occasion. So I'm sure this will affect more than just the 5% they are "targeting". While I understand the problems they face with heavy users I'm not too sure I agree with the proposed solution.

Yikes! I remember back in the beginning when usage was limited and overtime fees were shocking. I hope this gets reigned in.

Re: Unlimited internet a thing of the past?
If this becomes trend -- then say goodbye to YouTube, advanced internet tools such as live communication, audio and video streaming, legal music downloading, online gaming (PC, MAC, Playstation 3, Wii, XBox 360), legal movie downloading (Netflix JUST went to providing movies that you can download in HD.. a 1.5 - 2 GB, even 4 GB download alone)... you'll kill you're limit in no time renting just a few movies), VOIP, etc, etc, etc.
This is just a very bad idea. It limits the potential of the internet and is only a way to make money for these greedy internet companies. We need to embrace technology, continue to develop, and make it available to everyone without limits.
This idea is stupid and anti-technological-advancement.

exactly what I was thinking. Just as video streaming is becoming popular. I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about netflix and others jumping all over this. I'm sure there's more to follow.

Re: Unlimited internet a thing of the past?
I remember those days of limited access with AOL.
I have wireless internet through Alltel in which I signed a 2 year service agreement. Hopefully that will keep me safe if something were to happen!

I think this will fail miserably and people will drop them and they will have to stop this idea. Unless the oil companies buy them or the post office and then they can go up on prices regardless of demand.

Hopefully the phone companies don't follow suit with DSL. Since one DSL customer really doesn't effect another (unlike cable) they shouldn't. With cable, one customer using massive amounts of bandwidth can effect other customers.

I've had bellsouth for years now... I was upset about having to go to DSL after being on Comcast cable for 3 years in Tuscaloosa. Overall, I've had a good experience with DSL.
However, I'm about to move -- and I'll have to get cable internet. DSL won't be an option because I won't have a landline phone. Hopefully this idea of limits and over-use surcharges will bomb soon.

...well, it's not a charity. Do you work for nothing? I sure as hell don't, and I charge the most for my work that the market will bear (which ain't enough).
That said, the free market will prevail, as long as the government doesn't muck it up. If a few companies start imposing limitations, some other company will see the potential to grab their customers and make more money by not imposing restrictions. Trust me, the greed of companies inevitably works out to the benefit of the consumer.
