Not safe anywhere

CARROLLTON, OH —
The quick actions of a great-grandfather probably saved the lives of his granddaughter and great-grandchildren when a gunman burst into a Carrollton house on Thursday, according to Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams.

According to Williams, an Overlook Ln. resident was having a garage sale at her residence as part of a community sale. The woman was inside the house with her two small children when a man – later identified as Jason R. Haught, 30, whose last known address was N. Lisbon St., Carrollton – entered the house through a door connecting to the garage. He was carrying a shotgun.

Haught aimed the shotgun at the woman then grabbed her. The woman screamed, and Haught reportedly told her to stop or he would take her children. The woman was thrown against a wall and again yelled for help.

However, Haught hadn’t seen the woman’s 72-year-old grandfather sitting in the family room. The man was able to move quietly behind Haught and take the gun from him. Haught then fled from the house into the nearby woods.

Williams and Maj. Shane Steele went to the woman’s house to search for Haught after a telephone call for help was received at the Carroll County Sheriff Department at 3:42.
Carrollton Police Chief Ron Yeager and four other deputies assisted in the 30-minute search of the wooded area.

According to Yeager, he spotted a man matching the description of Haught in high grass and was able to maneuver behind him without being seen. When Haught started to run, Yeager tackled him. Haught didn’t struggle once he was caught.

Haught reportedly stayed at a village hotel Monday night but had been asked to leave and not return, according to Williams.

While Williams and deputies were taking statements at the woman’s residence, a house break-in was reported by a resident of Salineville Rd. Williams and Lt. Robert Watson went to the residence with the shotgun Haught was carrying, and it was identified as one taken from the house.

Williams said the Remington 12-gauge pump shotgun was fully loaded with a round in the chamber ready to fire.

Also reported stolen from the Salineville Rd. residence were 50 to 100 rounds of shotgun ammunition, a cellular phone and a fishing vest full of tackle valued at about $200.

Williams said Haught apparently went to the garage sale on foot. As of Thursday night, Haught was in Carroll County jail where questioning was to continue. Williams said he expects charges to be filed this morning
