Most of my life is spent outdoors, I despise my environment to be despoiled or endangered. I worked in the oilfields for a short period when I was much younger and it was an ugly, messy place. They've cleaned up considerably since. It's a necessary evil, our country couldn't have grown or supported our population without it. This isn't going to change completely for decades. Other than coal, other sources of energy won't supply sufficient volume.
Why haven't environmentalists spent more time pushing for windmills, hydro-electric dams, electric cars, etc instead of continuing to whine about global warming and fossil fuels? Who are they expecting to invest in these, the oil companies? Liberal environmentalists are unwilling to invest heavily in the very things they promote. Where is George Soros and his billions? No, he wants to use his money to fight republicans. How about Ted Turner and his millions? If they aren't going to use their money to help solve our dilema, maybe they should keep their mouths shut.
Environmentalists, with the support of democrats, have succeeded in force-feeding us corn-based ethanol, which is a ridiculous debacle. Weather, including droughts and the current floods in the midwest can always adversely affect corn production. If we used all of the corn produced in this country for ethanol, it would only replace 15% of our current gas requirements.
Why aren't oil companies drilling on the hundreds of thousands of acres they already have under lease?
Why are China and other countries able to drill around the Caribbean and we can't? Is this crazy?
Do environmentalists, democrats and liberals really believe that if by holding us hostage by restrictive laws concerning fossil fuels, that "pooff ", miraculously, their agenda has succeeded and millions of lower income people won't suffer? It will take many years to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and somebody should consider how we'll survive until that day arrives.
Are "open border advocates", environmental "screamers", anti-war protesters, steadfast Al Gore believers, abortionists, vegetarians, people against more refineries, people against drilling and Obama supporters, the same people?
Why can't we devise a system to somehow transport flood waters to drought areas? The floods in Iowa and the midwest are going to make Katrina seem like a mere thunderstorm. The ecomonic effect on this country will be astronomic, some food prices may rise above 100%.
Both McCain and Obama continue to fudge on some of their original stands on issues, thank goodness. Maybe they'll get it right before we vote.

I am in complete and total agreement with you saddlebum. There is no doubt that with every Industrial Innovation made during the Industrial Revolution, something had to be traded in return, whether it be enviromental, personal, or physical. There definetly needs to be alot less verbal action and more physical action when it comes to our future. I know that even with myself, I am more mindful of my actions and their impact on future generations. One thing is for sure, nothing was ever accomplished by writing songs or protesting for that matter. (damn dirty hippies) We need more creative thinking in solving our problems. The answers are out there, and maybe closer to being exposed than we know.
Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation.

One of my many nicknames is "Hippy" because I wear a sweatband when working and when I tried to play tennis in a previous life. My hair is a little long and, believe it or not, I'm more liberal than most of my friends, but not so much that "I'll cut off my nose to spite my face".
And I bathe occasionally, tonight's the night.

Legislation requiring lower harmful emissions from coal will drive electric bills higher.
Even corn syrup and corn syrup sweetners will be much higher.
There's nothing in sight that's going to be cheaper.
