I have bought a new computer that has windows xp professional. I can't hit the internet. The guy I bought it from took it back to his shop and hit the internet. I have Demopolis Cable. My husband has xp on his notebook and can hit the intranet at work, but can't get on the internet at home. Does it have to do with the connection speed or what? Does cable not support xp? Please help! I feel like a dummy and am really very smart when it comes to computers. It is not the firewall. It tells me limited connectivity, and won't hit... Thanks!

There are no issues between XP and cable. In my MIL's office, we use XP and have MediaCom High Speed Cable Internet service. Everything works fine! I think you are going to have to go into the network setup wizard and set up an internet connection for your home cable internet, if you have not already done so.

Sounds like the SP2 problem that Microsoft released a patch for.

Click here to goto MS and download the Patch (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=17d997d2-5034-4bbb-b74d-ad8430a1f7c8&displaylang=en)

If it still doesn't work, turn off your Modem (and router if you have one), wait about 30 seconds, then turn on the modem, then the router (again if you have one). then reboot your PC(s) if they are not already off. See if that works for ya.

Its Demopolis cable.....HELLO...
Thanks for more pointless bashing. Appreciate it.

I'm betting you are connecting by ethernet cable. The cable modem systems control their access (pays vs nonpaying customers, etc) by MAC address. Each piece of network equipment has its own unique hardware address call the MAC address (don't ask what MAC stands for, too early in the morning).

In all likelyhood, your other system's MAC address is setup in your account on the system and your other PC is being ignored, as it is an unauthorized MAC.

It won't pull an IP address because it isn't in the system. The limited connectivity message is a clue to point in that direction. It can be caused by a bad cable or by not pulling an IP address, etc... anything to cause problems with your network connection.

If this is the case, then you will need to get a router and have your exisiting modem set to Bridge mode (which can be a real pain in the *** depending on what modem they give you). The ISP *MAY* be able to help you set that part up, but doubtful they will offer any more assisitance getting your router configured.

I am the outside tech for CATV, when something goes wrong, they call me, so I know the exact setup required. Nothing fancy. As a matter of fact, set up a router to clone a MAC address and you're good to go.
Truthfully, if I knew who Blossomgirl was, I could add another MAC to her account and take care of it if all they need is to swap computers on occasion.

[I bought a router and configured it to the windows xp, and everything says I am connected to the internet. Although, I cannot pullup a website address at all. I put my computer with 98 on, and here I am. I know I probably need a MAC address, so that is what we can work on today.. Oldman, you didn't come by yesterday.. So could you check on this today? My husband will be here until 2:30 and I will be home after 3:00. Thanks!

I don't know anything about the hookup but I do know that I operate windows XP on cable and have the high speed internet and have no problems. The cableman( bless his heart) hooked it all up for me. I can ask my brother if you want he is like old man he is a computer tech and the cable guy. He is the on that fixes my computer all the time if I have a bug or something.

I'm Carla's husband (blossum girl)...my company Laptop also utilizes Win XP. I have been using it on this modem since May with no probs. For some reason now I can't hit the internet anymore. I have checked the cable and I have talked to (oldman) about it. It's really strange....A Mac address does make sense in this scenerio but why do we need it NOW?...Anyways I have to have my internet up and running quick like..I am required as part of my job to have internet and they foot the bill..
I can't even check my company e-mail on this win 98 Computer. It's not set up for that. I need help (ha, ha, ha)
