David Lyn Bowden, a former Linden Police Officer, was sentenced to 8 years in prison. This includes 3 years for possession of crack cocaine with intent to sell, and 5 years for possession a firearm while attempting to sell illegal drugs. He’s also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of 7,500 dollars. An investigation revealed Bowden was selling the crack while on duty as a Pine Hill Police Officer, and even selling out of his police car. Bowden also revealed information to the FBI which led to the search warrant of his father’s home, Preston Bowden, which eventually led to his arrest and following guilty plea. Since Preston plead guilty at his trial for possession of stolen firearms, his son won’t have to testify against him; a scenario he was apparently willing to take part in. Preston is scheduled to be sentenced on February 26th, 2003.
Max Bailey resigned from the hospital board last week. He was replaced by Webb Tutt, who was voted in by majority vote of the Demopolis City Council. 2 nominations were presented to the Council to vote on; Tutt and Gus Weiss. This was the 2nd time in 2 weeks Weiss was nominated for consideration by Councilmen Thomas Moore. This all comes amidst continued controversy surrounding the Hospital concerning payment for indigent care. One glaring point made by the County Commission, (which this latest appointment illustrates), is the fact that the Demopolis City Council appoints 5 of the 9 hospital board members. The County Commission appoints none of the 5, although they are the ones being sued into paying. All sides agree the hospital is very important to the community. The hospital states it’s the law, which the County is required to pay for indigent care. The Commission wants full access to the hospital’s financial records to see how all the money is being spent. The only thing for certain right now is the problem isn’t going away any time soon.
COTR was another great time this year. The Town Square was packed with attractions and people from all over. The Children’s Day parade was excellent as always, and we “Biz Admins” had an awesome time while in it. Big thanks to Jeff for our floats design and construction, and another big thanks to Bebo for getting all the toys and beads we threw out. All the floats in the parade were works of art. The Nautical Parade featured some excellent float designs. All in all, another successful week of COTR in Demopolis.
