On April 30, The Demopolis Times will publish its annual Progress edition and, this year, the publication will feature a section completely devoted to making readers laugh. Even better, readers in Demopolis and West Alabama will get the chance to publicly tell their funniest stories and jokes.
There’s a perk for those who decide to participate in the humor section: The writer who submits the funniest story will receive a $50 cash prize; the writer who submits the funniest joke will receive a $25 cash prize.
The contest begins today and will conclude at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13. Rules for the contest are as follows:
Funniest Story
Entries can be no longer than 250 words;
Entries cannot contain foul language, disparaging remarks about a person or insensitive material;
Entries must be readable by both adults AND children;
Entries can be personal and original or they can be stories you’ve heard;
Entries are not judge on exact grammar.
Funniest Joke
Entries can be no longer than 150 words;
Entries cannot contain foul language, disparaging remarks about a person or insensitive material;

The winners of the Funniest Story and Funniest Joke will be announced in the 2005 edition of Progress in a section called “Living to Laugh.” To submit a story or joke, e-mails are preferred but faxes and regular mail will be accepted.

Any person wishing to enter the contest must sign his or her name and give a contact phone number. However, The Times also will accept anonymous stories and jokes. Only those who give their names will be eligible to win the contest.
