A girls basketball coach who complained that his players got shabbier treatment than the boys team - then found himself benched - can sue for retaliation, the Supreme Court said yesterday in a case that expands the protections of a landmark gender equity law.
In a 5-4 decision, the court sided with Roderick Jackson, a high school girls basketball coach at Ensley High School in Birmingham, Ala., who said his coaching duties were stripped after he repeatedly complained that the equipment and practice facilities provided to his team were inferior to what the boys received.
Here is the rest of the story
Basically, the court has extended the same power to sue for retaliation to Title IX that has existed under the Civil Rights Amendements for years. Just as a white person can sue for retaliation she recieves for standing up for the rights of blacks, now a man can sue for retaliation he experiences for standing up for the rights of women.
I say kudos to the court. Title IX protections would be impotent if this provision were not allowed!
