Mississippi Medicaid

Apparently Missisppi is having some major issues with thier Medicaid program.

Medicaid the only means of paying for medical services for a lot of people, and the problems that Mississippi is having right now is putting a lot of people out in the cold. Here is a little info that I just came across on the issue.

Quote:
Welcome to the ACS EDI Gateway's Home Page for Mississippi Medicaid!

The Mississippi Remittance Vouchers are currently unavailable.

TO: All Medicaid Providers
This is to officially inform you that the Division of Medicaid current financial status dictates that we will run out of money to pay for Medicaid provider claims by Monday, February 28, 2005 barring any legislative action.

Please continue to provide your valuable services to our beneficiaries throughout the entire month of February. We estimate that we have the means for reimbursement until February 28.

Your cooperation in this vital matter and your compassion for our beneficiaries is especially appreciated during this crisis.

Sincerely,
Warren A. Jones, M.D.,
Executive Director

Southaven, MS - Mississippi Medicaid sent word it would stop paying medicaid claims Feburary 28th. Then it apparently changed to this Friday. At the moment nobody seems to know what's going on.

So at the moment, nobody.... nobody seems to know what's up with Mississippi Medicaid. Some doctors are taking patients on a case-by-case basis, and none of the handful of doctors taking Medicaid WE talked to, intend to see patients after Friday.... UNLESS something changes in Jackson... and most people don't seem very optimistic about that.
They don't mention it, but nursing homes survive off of Medicaid here in Alabama. If the do the same in Mississippi, there will be alot of layoffs because of this.

Re: Mississippi Medicaid

Me thinks the welfare system in the southern states could use a good overhauling. Someone please appoint me Welfare Commissioner! I promise to evaluate each case individually on it's merits and thin out the welfare rolls! Think of the money I could save the State of Alabama each year!

Re: Mississippi Medicaid

You might be right about the need to overhaul, but what about the need for people to actually get out and work, and be responsible for their choices. I work in the medical field, and see, on a daily basis, people on medicaid who could be working, people who have jobs making reasonable salaries having their kids on medicaid, all the same time driving around in late model cars with gucci purses, $150 Nike shoes and cell phones hanging on.

Medicaid waiver (prenatal) patients often come in on their 3rd, 4th or higher number pregnacy without the means to support the children they conceive or give birth to. I keep hearing about reproductive rights, but what about reproductive responsibilities?????????

What about the people who are penalized in MS for being married. Who have a job but have to wait the prelimanary 90 days for insurance.Or the single mother who's husband split and wont get a job and although she works she can't afford the $50+ a week some insurance companys charge per week. What about the kids who were born with a disability and there's no way in heck their parents could afford 20% of $80,000 hospital bill. On top the that the deductible. What about the people who can't work b/c their's not a day care center anywhere that will take a special needs child. Don't class everyone in the same boat. I for one am thankful that my kids have decent health insurance now and when we lived in MS. MS Medicaid is pathetic and yes I had it for my daughter who has SSI and I don't have a late model car and if I did that wouldn't be any of your business. I don't collect welfare. And as a health care worker maybe you should worry more about the care they need then the cars they drive or shoes they wear. Last I checked that wasn't a question in the chart.

Sorry for getting back with you on your reply.

The people I care for do get good medical care, no matter if they have insurance, medicare, medicaid, worker's comp or nothing at all. I do not have a problem with people who have real reasons for not working, or have real disabilities. I do not have a problem with the people who are trying and need a little help, such as the single mother you quote above.

I do have a problem with the people who are perfectly capable of working but choose to live off the system, such as two recent patients who were both on disability for asthma (ie, asthma so severe to prevent them from being able to work) but with neither one on any medicine for asthma. Or the patient who is eligible for pregnancy medicaid, but does not get the paperwork in or go to the appointments because it "isn't convinient" (one of those "responsibility" things). It amazes me how many people in our community hav disability for "bad nerves", but don't get any counseling or are taking any meds for "bad nerves".

We also have a disproportionate share of people who are on "medicaid disability", which means that they didn't work enough in their entire life to qualify for medicare (about 3-4 years total). Perhaps I just see a lot of the abusers of the system, but i is frustrating when I have people that are truly disbled and can't get on state programs, while the one's who are abusing the system slide right in, and then want to vote for upping my taxes (since they usually don't pay any) so they can get more.

Of course, that's just my opinion..........
