You might want to write your congressman...

From The Birmingham News:

Quote:
MONTGOMERY - Lawmakers say there's a good chance a feud over a plan to give higher education an extra $46.25 million will kill next year's state education budget in the Legislature's regular session, which must end by May 16.

If that happens, the resulting uncertainty likely will force county and city school superintendents to fire many young, untenured teachers by the end of May, when teaching contracts are signed for the following school year, said state Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma.
For the full story, click here.

The contentious part of the budget is a bill that would give public universities and two-year colleges an extra $46.25 million this year.

With no budget, Gov. Bob Riley would be forced to call lawmakers back in special session to try again to pass a budget before Oct. 1.

The Senate will likely debate the plan on Tuesday.

Want to do your part?

Then gather information about the bill and the budget, talk to your children's or grandchildren's teachers, talk to the superintendent, then call your congressman.

Re: You might want to write your congressman...

I seriously doubt tuition ever going down. I am a senior at UA now, and never have understood how they could be in need of more money. Here are some numbers I threw around
  • 15727 instate undergrads give $125,816,000 per year in tuition
  • 5242 out of state undergrads give $38,872,000 per year in tuition
  • 2850 instate grad students give $28,500,000 in tuition
  • 950 out of state grad students give $18,050,000 in tuition

This come up to a grand total of $211,238,000 just in student tuition and fees.

Keep in mind this doesn't account for the countless donations, royalties, endorsements, etc... that the University has as income.

I just don’t get how they could be hurting that bad for money that they would want to take it out of the public school system. If they keep doing this kind of crap, they might as well make tuition free, because there won't be any kids educated enough out of high school to even go!

Higher education is an EXCELLENT thing, but sometimes they really look like a bunch of money hungry *******s!

Look around. Facilities. One building was built in the 7 years I went to UA. I graduated 11 years ago, and there are so many new buildings there now that I barely recognize the place. Associate professors are fleeing because they don't get paid enough, academic programs have been cancelled, etc., but there soon won't be a bare spot of ground left on campus.

Re: You might want to write your congressman...

This is true, but pretty much all of the new buildings were funded from donations given to the university for that specific purpose. Case and point the new chemistry building on the far corner of the engineering side of campus. That money came from Richard Shelby, and talk is he will be giving a lot more for the engineering dept.

Shelby Hall was built with federal taxpayer money that Richard Shelby got allocated to UA through his comfy seat on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. Blount Hall, however, was built with donations from a private foundation.

And for those of you who have noticed the new construction on the stadium, be comforted to know that the money has ALL come from private sources
