Is this hunting?

I know there are a bunch of hunters on DLive - what do you think about this?

Online Hunting Firm Is Now the Quarry
Lawmakers nationwide are targeting a website that allows computer users to fire at game roaming a Texas ranch.
By Nancy Vogel
Times Staff Writer

April 21, 2005

SACRAMENTO — So far, John Lockwood has had only two customers for his new Internet-based business, yet lawmakers in California, 14 other states and Congress are moving to shut it down.

Lockwood operates a website — live-shot.com — that for a few hundred dollars lets anyone with access to a computer shoot and kill a variety of animals roaming a fenced ranch in Texas.

A rifle, video camera and computer are mounted on a stand at the ranch at a spot frequented by deer, antelope and sheep. From thousands of miles away, via computer, a person can control the camera and gun, firing with a click of the mouse.

Even if Lockwood doesn't yet have customers lining up around the block, the mere notion that a venue exists for remote-controlled killing has triggered a backlash of disgust, compelling lawmakers and forging an unlikely coalition of big-game hunters and animal rights activists.

Lockwood's venture has offended sensibilities even in Texas, where many private hunting ranches promise clients they can bag exotic trophy animals such as impala and wildebeest.

"It's not hunting," said Kirby L. Brown, executive vice president of the Texas Wildlife Assn., which represents landowners, hunters and conservationists. "It falls off of the end of the ethical chart."

Check it out:

Maybe we can tie in the Bowhunter game in the Arcade for that extra shot of realism...

Re: Is this hunting?

One question: What happens to the animal? I see that taxidermy and processing are available at extra charge, but what happens to the animal if the person does not want it after killing it? Where does the meat go? If it is not used, then this is as bad as poaching to me. Don't kill anything you don't plan to eat has always been my motto.

On one hand, this does both disturbing and sad. Disturbing because it is so clinical for the shooter and does not make them actually experience the death of the animal (think back to your first deer...you know the feeling I'm talking about.) Sad because hunting is a total experience, not just shooting something. Ask the deer hunter who sat perfectly still in her stand for 30 minutes waiting to get a good shot of that buck. Or ask the turkey hunter who gets up at 2:00 a.m. every day during turkey season...and who doesn't even hear a gobble most mornings. Somehow, being able to sit in your Lazyboy and shoot a animal feels like cheating.

On the other hand, I do see valid applications of the technology for the disabled. Several organizations help the disabled experience hunting, and remote gun technology could bring the sport to even more people. But again, it seems that total remote access negates that purpose. Instead, perhaps we could apply the technology to making remote controlled guns that could be operated by quadraplegics and other disabled persons while IN the field.

Just some thoughts.

Re: Is this hunting?

thats not hunting. that's cheating. and its stupid. it takes away the whole meaning of hunting. your supossed to go out and "hunt" the animals. using cunning, luck and all sorts of camo and the like. that's part of it. the wait. the thrill of the "hunt" not just sit at your computer and play a game that actually takes life. what will they think of next. i hope they do shut him down.

My hands tremble, my voice quakes,
my heart cries out, my body shakes,
my tears fall, my breath stills,
my strenght fails, my mind reels.....

Re: Is this hunting?

sorta like an airman at a remote control station piloting a predator drone to drop a gbu. or maybe a fighter pilot dropping afforementioned gbu though clouds on target he can't see, only knows has been painted with soflam by spec ops team. i guess all killing, be it hunting, execution, abortion, combat or starving a woman to death over the course of two weeks, should be done with the killer looking directly into the eyes of the kill-ee, and doing the deed personally. no room for error there. back to my bunker. let the s@#tstorm begin.

I think cat hunting in Wisconsin would be more entertaining. Will the elected clowns in Monkeytown get off their sorry butts and offer Alabama hunters a chance of exterminating a few stray cats?

Re: Is this hunting?

It's too much like a video game this way. They have assist devices that disabled hunters can use to go out and bag that buck. If you are to the point you cannot leave your computer screen and go outside in any capacity, hunting is a privilege you should probably consider giving up.
