MA Loses Headmaster

I was told while in town over the past weekend that Butch Russell vacated the Headmaster position @ Marengo Academy. From what I was told, Russell and the Board of Directors were in disagreement over the way he (Russell) wanted to discipline the students.

I think this will be MA's loss, not Butch Russell's. Butch Russell is a stand up guy and loves his work. I don't see where anything he would have meted out in the way of discipline to the kids at that school would have been anything less than fair and justified.

Judging by the actions of some of the children from MA in recent months, some good old fashioned discipline should be in order, moreso at home than at school! Oh well! I guess these preppy parents running the school know what's best for their children!

i know for a fact that some of the students there need more discipline than any average child. there school system really sucks i know i used to be a student and then i transfered to demopolis and got more an education and more discipline.

I agree with you 100% richealle. I was going to send my oldest to MA, but had several parents tell me either send her to Sweetwater or send her to Demopolis. For now I sent her to Sweetwater where she is doing real good. Can't see sending her to Demopolis right now, though I work at GP and making good money to send her to Demopolis.

I'm sorry if I step on any ones toes about Demopolis School system. Don't get me wrong. I have heard alot of good things about the school. Just that is a long drive for my wife and she don't like to drive a long distance unless I'm with her. If it is over fifteen miles for her to drive, then she gives me a dirty look.... lol. In which I live about twent-seven miles one way from Demopolis.

Also another problem is the price of gas. Geeeeeeeeeesh, with it going up like it does, you know how much it cost to fill up a Ford Expedition with the mid grade gas. Heck that goes that fifty dollar bill.

I went to MA and I feel I got a great education. I was way ahead of my peers when I went to college. The thing about a little private school like that is that the delinquents are not visible like they are at other schools. You can't pick them out by their clothes or where they live. Actually, the more preppy they are, the more money their family gives to the school, and the more squeaky-clean they look, the more likely it is that they are the ones getting away with murder. The principal at the time was a real jerk, but no one who stayed out of trouble had to deal with him much, unless he was teaching a class, then look out! I was pleased to hear he retired, then appalled to hear another school system actually hired him.

It is MA's loss! Mr Russell was the best principal I ever had. He was very supportive and easy to go to if you had any problems.

Butch Russell is a stand up kinda guy!He still does alot for the Demopolis School System, which by the way is not for everyone. Some students require smaller class rooms with one on one attention. Most private schools in our area, are generally so strapped for cash that they can not offer the advanced curriculum that you need in college today. And I know there are exceptions to every rule. Bottom line, make the best of what you do have.MA lost a good family oriented educator

I wish WAP could get Mr. Russell. He's a very qualified man from everything I've heard. I haven't heard anything about problems with the board and Mr. Russell at MA, however, I did hear that his wife was retiring this year and that he decided to retire as well so that they could do some traveling. Perhaps the problems with the board at MA stepped up his plans a bit. I think it's MA's loss. I sure wish he would reconsider retirement and come to WAP.

I agree with you Lucy... I myself am a former DA grad now WAP. I think that the school system needs good ole Butch. As far as MA well they need to realize that they are idiots for lettin the great principal go. Who knows maybe Butch will go to WAP.

I remember when Mr. Russell was the principal at DHS. It was my sophomore year...then Thomaskutty came along and I hated it after that...I'm so glad that Thomaskutty left!

I really hate to hear that Mr. Russell is leaving. All I have ever heard about him was good. I firmly believe in discipline. I know when I was at Marengo Academy there was never much trouble because the students knew it would not be tolerated. My son graduated from there also and he knew just how far he could go without the wrath of a wooden paddle. They had my permission to discipline him as necessary. A lot of the problems at MA now are the parents not the students. Oh well, time to get off my soapbox!
