Citizens to give a send-off.
On Friday morning, January 24th, Demopolis citizens sent off the National Guard troops of the 167th Engineers – Bridge Assault Unit. They will be leaving at 8:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend a brief ceremony, where A. Caldwell is expected to say something, along with some military people following a private breakfast given to the troops. Gov. Riley, Senator Sessions, Rep. Autur Davis, and any other Alabama officials are not expected to attend. Let’s hope these weekend warriors get to stay in Ga. and not have to build bridges in the desert.
Griggers sworn in as new DA.
With Nathan Watkins resigning his duties as 17th Judicial Circuit District Attorney, one of Gov. Don Siegelman’s last acts as our head was to appoint Asst. DA Greg Griggers the new DA of the 17th district; which covers Marengo, Greene, and Sumter counties. Griggers is an Auburn and Alabama Grad., and worked at the local firm of Lloyd and Dinning here in Demopolis. Griggers will work off Watkins remaining term of 2 years, then plans to seek re-election in the office. One local when asked how he felt about the appointment of Griggers--- “Figures.”
Linden keeps previous dog ordinance.
After some debate, accusations, tantrums, and common sense speeches, Linden council voted unanimously to keep the dog ordinance that’s been in dispute. They didn’t say whether it would be enforced or not, since it hasn’t been enforced up to this point. Some concerns were expressed that police would be shooting dogs they could not catch. Mayor Vice stated this was for mangy, curs, and vicious dogs. The ordinance clearly states all dogs will be kept either in a fence or on a chain no less than 10 ft and no longer than 20 ft. Anyone dogs caught not in compliance should be picked up.
