State Income Tax Returns
I received a letter from the state requesting receipts for every item I claimed on my taxes this year...My return was almost identical to the last 3 years filings...same deductions ..

I was just wondering if the state is so broke they are buying time and hoping folks can't back up their claims or what? I have heard alot of people are getting the same letter if the state owes them over $1,000.00 or more back...

Anybody else get that letter?

I hve not heard of anybody getting this letter in the mail.. but i have never gotten anyting back from the state i have always had to pay the state.. who does you taxes for you.. they might could help explain why you are getting this letter...

One of the tax offices here in town told us that almost everyone who was entitled to a refund of any size was getting this letter...I know the state is broke but good grief...For the last 8 years we have had the same deductions for contstruction travel and have gotten almost the same amount back each year...wonder why they didn't question any of the past years....glad they didn't, but wonder why?

Whew! Glad I didn't have to file Alabama taxes. I have a HUGE folder each year for all of our deductions. I AM suprised they sent you a letter to look at just this year. I would think they would want to see at least the past 3 years if they were going to question your deductions. Hope you have kept good records of the travel. I know I do, down to the laundry receipts.

I am saddened to know that our Military personnel have to even go through the tax ordeal. If it weren't for you guys (and girls) we wouldn't have the freedom to do anything. As far as the letter Meri, I haven't gotten one yet and really hope I don't! :dunno: How's that baby MP?

I hope we don't get the letter. We get a lot of deductions with the gallery and have gotten back a nice amount each year lately. I hope it's just those who get back over a thousand that gets audited. I have all my receipts and I use a tax program to help me figure it but still wouldn't like to have to go through all that again!

I got a refund this year, and haven't gotten the letter, so it's just a random audit. Happens all the time, and you just happened to get caught in it, Meri. Sorry

I have everything except some medical payments but I have requested them...it is just a huge headache...My husbands job keeps up with the mileage and job sites for me so that wasn't a problem...they wanted receipts for every deduction on the form...we got back less this year than the last 3 years...it just made no sense to me...why this year????

You probably just got caught in a random audit. From what I have been told by a person who works for the revenue commission, Alabama randomly audits about 1% of the individual returns filed each year, asking only for documentation for that year. If they were doing a specific audit (as they do when they really think that you've been doing something wrong), then they would ask for documentation for more than one year. Because you itemize, you have more of a chance of being audited than someone who does a straight return.

It is a huge hassle, whether you're being audited by the IRS or the AL Revenue Commission. And it may seem like a waste of time because they usually don't find any wrongdoing. But when they DO catch someone in one of these random audits, they usually find LOADS of money (think Willie Nelson and Al Capone).
