Naheola Bridge gets new name.

The bridge scheduled for completion in August of this year will be known as the “Richard Shelby Naheola River Bridge”. Most folks commuting to Georgia Pacific from Linden and Demopolis would agree they can call it anything as long as they call it “ready for business”. Shelby is credited for acquiring most of the funds needed to complete the project. Senator Shelby will be at the Depot Restaurant in Linden on Saturday February 1st for his annual “town meeting”. All are welcomed to attend.

Money for school being held up.

The Delta Regional Authority has a total of 8 states sitting on their hands waiting on promised funds. The City Council’s announcement of the new center, including an artist’s rendition of the new building, may have been premature. According to John Riggs, executive director of the Alabama-Tombigbee Regional Commission, the DRA wants accountability for the money released. Right now, there is no way to audit where the money goes or who is responsible for it. Mayor Caldwell’s hope for a fall 2003 opening looks doubtful.

Demopolis citizens divided over Bush tax plan.

The tax plan is simple; across-the-board tax cut benefiting everyone that pays taxes. Predictably, most folks who oppose the plan are those who pay little or no federal taxes at all. According to one such citizen, “All Bush is doing is helping out the rich.” Others feel it’s the only fair way to give tax relief. “If you pay more taxes than I do, then you should get back more money than I do.” The argument is the same here that you hear between the leaders in Washington. As in Washington, you’ll never convince the other side they are wrong.
