Needed: 300 kids needing tire swings.
Ben Lane needs a place to stick his tires. Well, actually he needs a place that Clarence Brooker will be happy with. Ben Lane, owner of Lane’s Tire in Demopolis, was served a letter from Brooker stating the storage trailer he is using to store used tires isn’t acceptable, and he needs to find a more acceptable way to store his tires within 30 days. The issue seems to be that the structure used could possible blow down in the event of a tornado or extremely high winds. So could everything else on 80. Councilmen Ronnie O’Neal and Woody Collins showed support for Lane stating he’s doing what he can. The expense of paying a contractor to come and haul out the used tires is too great a burden at this time. The Council or Brooker couldn’t offer any suggestions as to what Lane and other tires store owners could do to remedy the situation. How about drop it. If I owned a store, I’d make everyone take their old tires with them. Then you’d see the tires all over the place, not stacked neatly in an enclosed area.
More Guardsmen leave out.
160 Army National Guard members of the 1166th Military Police Co. from Greensboro and Thomasville have been called up for duty. Also called up were 40 members of the 232nd Combat Communications from the Air Guard in Montgomery, and 170 members of the 781st Transportation Company of Fort Deposit, Georgiana and Daleville. This brings Alabama’s Guard total to 530 that have been called up to active duty. The 160 Guardsmen of the 167th Engineer Co. of Demopolis will be shipped to the Persian Gulf at the end of the month.
Collins talking trash.
Woody Collins sees trash in the road that goes by his business and he’s mad about it. In a rant to the Council, Collins went as far as to suggest we empower the city yard workers to give litter tickets. Another idea is to employ “trash police” since the regular police in Demopolis can’t seem to stop the littering. Collins later reported that he’s received tons of phone calls with ideas form citizens on how to combat the problem. Collins then backed off on his conviction, stating simply he doesn’t have the time to head such a movement. Whether we have someone with a trash badge, or folks riding around on golf carts with trash grabbers; that only solves half the problem. There are 2 parts to the solution: Stop people from littering, and pick up the trash already on the ground. With all of Collins ranting and suggesting, I doubt you’ll see him picking up any garbage. In Auburn they ad this deal where different groups on campus adopted a street. That group made the effort to keep that street clean. I’m sure the Council could do something like this. Each is responsible for their district, and should set the example by picking up some trash themselves.
