With the tragedy that was last years "Freedom on the River", I was wondering if this year would be any better ? From what I heard they have killed the "Best Burger in Bama" contest this year. Just thought I would throw this out there and see what you think on the subject. Should Demopolis try to support such a project or just let it die like unnamed "Arch Street Projects"
I think they should pour everything into the Arch Street project right now...get a really nice floating stage that could be moved and stored somewhere during the winter months. For FOTR they could bring in a bunch of really good entertainment...little rock and roll, little gospel, little country and maybe even a little jazz...something for everyone. Have an amazing fireworks show and if anyone wants to sell burgers or whatever, let them. Just focus on the entertainment and the fireworks. Even if they have to cancel FOTR until they get Arch street completed...of course that probably will never happen but that's what I would like.
Funny you should mention a floating stage. Pat and myself were discussing that exact thing last night. Did you know that a while back Kenny Chesney was coming through Demopolis and offered to play for only $10,000 ? But since we have no where big enough he just kept on passing through.

Re: Fubar on the River
What was the reasoning behind such a small firework show last year? In times past, that has been the biggest draw of people and they used to have a Really nice show. Last year I came away very disappointed! Has anyone said for sure whether they will do away completely with it this year or will it just be another small showing?
And if not, what other activities are they purposing for FOTR since they apparently have scratched the burger contest?
We're told the company that did the COTR fireworks show this past year will be doing the 4th of July show this year. If it's anything like the COTR show, it should be really good.
There is no more "Freedom on the River". The parade, Best Burger Competition, etc. have all been scratched. The only current plans are to have the little bike parade (kids decorate their trikes, bikes, wagons, ect.) and the firworks show. I'm assuming there will be refreshment stands, but that couldn't be confirmed.
The reasoning behind this move is money. Since the failed "FOTR" couldn't come close to matching the success of COTR, the city decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Didn't it take years of effort before COTR became the success it is today? FOTR should be given more time to develope. Local civic organizations should be the ones operating food, drink and possible game booths. Keep the money in the community instead of sending it away with outside vendors. By games, I mean how many of you would like a shot at the mayor sitting in a dunking booth?
Now lets be honest, presentation won it for yall, not the burger.
Did you even try our competition burger? If not you missed out. It was good and yes our presentation was good, but in order to win the burger still had to be good. Because who would let someone win with a terible burger.
I had to stop and ask self,"Do I really need to be here", and self says,"Only in the cover of darkness."
