Just one question "How long can "Demopolis Times" keep operating at a five day a week paper ? From my sources at "The Times" their numbers are way way down. Even their website only gets about .00056% the hits that this one gets ! I heard rumors of cut backs and people being let go from the paper this week. So if anyone has any info on why our local hometown paper is going to sh*& than please post !
I haven't heard anything but I'm not at all surprised. They went up once again on their annual subscription and I have no interest in paying that much for news about every community BUT Demopolis. I know they do print things about Demopolis but it seems very little and truthfully, when they do you don't know if it's factual or not. I can get more information here than in the paper. Besides...ya'll are much more fun.

Re: What is going on with the "Times"
The main reason I quit checking their website but about once a week is because they don't update it. The same stories and headlines will stay on there for a week at a time it seems. Not to bash them completely, because they do update the website more than they did at one time. But for a paper that comes out five times a week, I would just expect the website to have more information on it.
And it's like someone else said in their post, this website seems to be able to produce more informaiton anyway. I too am not suprised that the numbers are down for the paper.
My understanding is they fired their sports editor after he failed to cover probably the biggest sports story of 2005 (Baseball 4A state title).
The paper has slowly lost it's edge. The reporting on things like City Council and other meetings leaves so much out I find myself looking towards the Gazette and the Democrat for more information. I also agree the 5-day a week "experiment" seems to do little more than water down the news.

I can't say too much because obviously, I need my job. I am very disgusted at some things that are going on. Yes, our sports editor was fired and they have promoted one of the reporters to take his place, leaving us even more short-staffed than we were to begin with. We are expected to cover five counties five days a week with two reporters and a news editor. Now it's one reporter and a news editor. I really don't have an answer for y'all because like I said, I'm less than thrilled about what's going on too.
Some people complain because God put thorns on the roses; others praise Him because He put roses among the thorns

At least McElvy would cover stories. Does McCain do any writing or covering? Has the consideration of dropping back to 2 days a week come up? I agree there's a market for a decent paper in areas like Greensboro, but like many have stated not alot of folks here really care about Hale County unless it affects Demopolis and or Marengo County. When you have a free paper doing a better job of covering local news, you're in trouble.

Hey everyone - Denton here, your old loving sports editor. I was fired because, I'll just be bluntly honest, the Times did not like me. Boone Newspapers has had it out for me ever since my Christmas on the River screw-up and since then they have been trying to find a way to run me out. They did this past weekend. I did cover the games in Montgomery. I was down in the dugout with the kids after Seth's homerun celebrating with them because I have not missed but maybe one game all season and I love those kids and I love coach Moody. I also was in Montgomery covering DHS Softball and did a great job working with them all year as well. Speak with any DHS students, parents, cocahes, and teachers and they will tell you I did nothing but extreme coverage of Demopolis High School. I got into some crazy things this weekend when, to make a long story short, I was robbed and almost killed in Montgomery. All of my photos from the DHS Softball postseason were stolen along with my cell phone and the company laptop which had both of my baseball stories on it. I came back Monday to find out I had been fired and began to cry walking out the door - not because I will miss the Times because I don't feel they treat their employess right - but because I will miss Demopolis High and the teams I learned to grow and truly love after spending a full year of in-depth daily coverage with those kids and those teams. I am very passionate about my job and love DHS. I then, after being fired, had to come home a write the story that was printed about the DHS state championship from MEMORY. I was in a devistated state of mind and still had to try and think clear to get a good story out there for THOSE KIDS. I have had a great time, for the most part, during my time here in Demopolis. But within the next two weeks, unfortunately, I will most likely be out of the state of Alabama completely. Thanks again for ALL the support throughout the year for all the troubles some people in the community and especially people at Boone have thrown at me. Love ya'll... and I'll miss ya'll.
