I left Demopolis about 13 years ago and I considered it just another rural town in Alabama. I visit several times a year and each time the town just seems to get better and better. There are now more businesses that I am excited about seeing. Kudos to the person who is in charge of landscaping. The city is now coming alive with personality and charm. I was recently in town and I am amazed with the appearance of downtown and the highway (the east end still leaves some to be desired). As I was watching the Food Network a while back, I suddenly saw a program about Smokin' Jacks and I felt a level of pride that never before existed. Then another program about the BBQ cookoff, then another about COTR. Congratulations to all of the citizens of Demopolis for revamping a fledgling town and turning it into something that you should all be proud of. I know that there will be many more things to come and I am excited to see what the future brings.
Thank you csp for your wonderful comments! Everyone is really trying to build up our little town and we have some great people doing their best to bring in new businesses. We'll be having a Super WalMart here hopefully by the first of the year and that should spur even more growth. Hope to see you around the site more often.
It's too bad I'm moving away when everything's fixing to flourish in Demop... but you have to move away to get a good college education. I'll be visiting occasionally though. I just hope the town doesn't grow out of it's shoe too quick.
Without problems, there would be no solutions and no way to improve life.

I really don't think there's a huge chance of that demoproblemis. LOL We've been here 26 years and have seen very little change. A lot of change will just get it caught up where it should have already been. LOL
I have to admit I don't know what Demopolis was like years ago, because I am new, but it has been the best move my family and I ever made. I have to agree with demoproblemis though about growth. Auburn was not prepared for the kind of growth it saw and it has created problems. It grew too much too quickly and without proper planning. I don't see that being a problem for Demopolis, but it is something the city planners should keep an eye on.
Some people complain because God put thorns on the roses; others praise Him because He put roses among the thorns
Demopolis is getting better and better. I just dont' want it to lose that "smalltown" feeling.
Whenever I see an old lady slip and fall on a wet sidewalk,
my first instinct is to laugh.
But then I think, what if I was an ant, and she fell on me.
Then it wouldn't seem quite so funny.

I feel old money in this town was the road block in the past, but now it seems Demopolis is growing. Finally some of the younger offspring of the older generations are making things happen. I'm glad to see new businesses opening & hope the new Super Wal-Mart can attract even more. We just need a few more family-styled restaurants.
Here's to it and here's to it again...if you get to it and don't do it...may you never get to it again!
What makes me sad is that I heard the other day that Golden Rule is coming to town and it's suppose to be on the other side of the carwash which is right by Smokin Jacks. I feel that we need to support our home-town resturants and not these other places coming in.
I also have recently returned to the area and have noticed the changes. However, it has always amazed me that Demopolis is such a small town. It has two major highways, two rivers, a railroad, an airport, and a great school system. Yet, it remains small.
The assets that the town and its people have would make most believe that it should be a thriving community where businesses would want to locate. However, the old money people in the town have kept a strangle hold on growth under the general premises that they did not want rift raft in the town. In reality they knew that if the town grew then they would possibly lose any influence they had.
The town is now growing because those people are slowly moving on and progress is slowly breaking threw the door. If they ever finish Highway 80 and Highway 43 then Demopolis should grow even faster. I have always said Demopolis needed a couple of fires and a few deaths and the town would flourish.

Unless Demopolis gets over the "outsiders" mentality, it will continue to be the same small town everyone loves to complain about. We need to be welcoming these folks in, having the courage to open chain stores and restaurants in small burgs like ours. Growth has to start somewhere. We've tried the homegrown approach for the last 20 years, and we've managed to stay in one place the entire time.
