Arcades not closing, Griggers backs off…Figures.

About a month ago, District Attorney Greg Griggers gave notice that all “adult arcades” operation in Marengo, Sumter, and Greene counties had to close their doors by midnight, March 1st, 2003, or face arrest. Police Chief Avery went as far as to say he would go around that Saturday and arrest anyone operating an illegal establishment after the deadline. Now Griggers has backed off of his statements, stating everyone has “misinterpreted” his words. Now it seems the casinos can stay open. Griggers has vowed to make cases against every arcade that pays out in cash. Griggers has hinted that undercover agents could be used to catch arcades giving out cash payouts. I’ve managed to obtain a photo of one of his agents. CLICK HERE (http://d-3.home.mindspring.com/undercover.jpg) He does not say whether he will go after arcades that pay out in gift certificates, which the majority do. There have been reports of folks winning up to $2000 in cash payouts at some of the facilities. Just out of curiosity, is this the action Griggers is going to take against all known illegal establishments? I can’t remember a crack house getting 30 days notice, just to be allowed to stay open till they are “caught”.

In case you didn’t believe me…

Just a few days after I had the nerve to question Goodloe Sutton’s integrity, he proves me right. Right on the cover of the February 27th edition of the Democrat-Reporter is a full color picture of the fatal wreck of Wilbur Hildreth. Goodloe made sure to back away far enough on the photo to include Hildreth’s body, covered with a white sheet. To add insult to this tragedy, he added the phrase “Highway 43 kills retiree”, as if we all need a catch phrase to remember this event. Mr. Hildreth was one of the nicest individuals you’d ever want to talk to. Even if he didn’t know you, you felt welcome in his presence. Goodloe couldn’t be bothered telling anything good about Mr. Hildreth, since he was too busy using his death (and photo) and a backdrop for his never-ending pitch to four-lane 43. Also on the cover are a few clever phrases to get “Demopolis” and “drugs” in the same sentence. It’s mandatory for the Democrat to always have something negative about Demopolis on the front cover. It would be very easy to put down Linden in the manor Goodloe tries to put down Demopolis. There isn’t a need for that though. Just look around Demopolis, and then find a reason to move to Linden.

Points of interest…

Demopolis High baseball has gotten off to a rough start, dropping their first two games of the season. The next game is scheduled for Tuesday March 4th at Jeff Davis, then a double-header at home March 8th. The Lady Tigers softball team is 1-1 on the season. They travel next to Greensboro on March 4th at 3:30, then to Northport on Thursday to play Tuscaloosa County.
A wild game supper will be held at 6 p.m. on March 7th at the Linden Baptist Church. The supper will feature keynote speaker Jeremiah Castle. On the menu items include: Mule deer/wild hog smoked linked sausage, quail fettuccini, elk stroganoff and smoked duck. Door prizes include rifles, a shotgun, and a bow. Only in the South would a dinner like this take place at church. Only a southerner (like me) could find the menu curiously appetizing.
Charles Nabors reports “charity care”, or indigent care as its better known, will total 1.5 million dollars for this fiscal year. Total debt will be 2.9 million dollars. Nabors states most of the remaining debt will be turned into “charity care”. Just a note- If the hospital wins its lawsuit, it will cost Marengo County around 3 million dollars a year.

Goodloe is just sad. I wonder if he would report the death of one of his own family members with the disrespect he shows everyone elses.

Just when I thought the newly appointed DA Greg Griggers was going to stand up and be a serious crimefighter, he turns and disappoints me.

I just knew for sure he was fixing to ******can the adult arcades for good. Regardless of what the owners / operators say, every one of them is paying out in cash. This I know for a fact. The adult arcades are nothing but illegal gambling operations pimping out on the Chucky Cheese Law. Not only that, but they are easy targets for armed robberies as has been the case lately. If you think a bunch of grown people are going to spend hours dumping buttloads of money in slot machines trying to win two-bit gift certificates to local merchants, then I got some prime multi-million dollar real estate in Dobb's Swamp I want to sell you!

I wonder who put the pressure on DA Griggers to get him to back down on this issue? Where did the grease for the squeaky wheel come from?

I wonder.........do you think I can get a license to open up a legal whorehouse in this county??? With the drug dealers, shot houses, and gambling going on around here, a truckload of whores peddling their services would be the star in Marengo County's crown!

Hey!!! Here's a grand idea for a new source of tax revenue!!! Maybe it could help pay for indigent care.

Just my 2 cents!
