Major computer problems

I have this "thing" on my computer at work. It is incessant pop ups and I can't get them to stop. I thought I had it fixed earlier today but turns out I was wrong. I have run spybot & adaware several times today trying to get everything off. I have run Norton Antivirus - nothing there. I have tried to run housecall but the first time I had a fatal error on my computer & it shut down. The second time they IE just closes down on its own. What else do I try?

At one point today it said I had download.trojan and I went to symantec & it just said to run the antivirus.

And one other thing. I tried to put a pop up blocker on there to help until I could get it fixed. It won't let me put google or yahoo on there. I did have yahoo until all this happened and it wiped it out!

Re: Major computer problems

You probably get the System Administrator @ work to look at your computer and let them fix it before you totally crash it.

Re: Major computer problems

IF you have access, goto your control panel, then to "add/remove programs". See if you have anything installed with the words "shopper" "toolbar" or"search" that you know you didn't install. I've had decent success removing the toolbars and such by simply removing the program causing them.

If you have a malware problem, I would run spybot and adaware (fully updated) while in safe mode.

heh, that's me by all accounts...

I thought you got it straightened out about 3 o'clock?

Gotta watch those pop up blockers, they tend to break lots of sites that use pop up windows for verification and such. McAfee's updates are quite often broken by pop up blockers.

download.trojan is a generic name for a multitude of hijackers and pop up engines that Housecall and Norton both detect. Often they cannot remove the entire program as it isn't in their database, so it will kill one file, fixing the problem until the program automatically updates itself again.

Re: Major computer problems

I have run the Norton this morning and it caught nothing at that time but since then I have had several "virus alert" boxes pop up from Norton telling me that it had deleted some trojans. I have gone to the control panel and there was only one thing on there that I didn't put on the computer so I took it off. I am now in the process of running housecall. When that finishes, do I need to run Spybot & adaware again?

Re: Major computer problems

Make sure they're updated and try again. It wouldn't hurt, but odds are it won't find it now either.

Re: Major computer problems

That is what I figured but I thought it may not hurt b/c they found so much yesterday. So much of what Spybot couldn't fix was in the registry.

The housecall is still running and it has already found one infection so maybe that is what is causing all the problems.
