“Felony possession of firearms was the case that they gave me.”

Preston Bowden Jr., former Linden Police Chief and City Councilman, was finally sentenced to 37 months in federal prison. The sentence comes from a guilty plea given on November 21st, 2002, in which Bowden admitted to possessing guns stolen from the evidence room at the Linden Police Dept. Judge Charles Butler Jr. heard the plea. Butler could be known as the “Linden Punisher”, residing over the trial of former Linden deputy Sonny Breckenridge, and hearing the guilty pleas of former Sheriff Roger Davis and deputy Robert Pickens.

Bingo license illegally given in Linden.

Someone forgot to do their homework. According to Linden City Attorney Woody Dinning Jr., the Linden City Council illegally granted a license to open a bingo parlor to Franceena’s Italian Restaurant. Currently only Mobile, Jefferson, Madison, and Montgomery counties can legally hold bingo games; this due to special amendments to the Alabama Constitution. In order for it to become legal in Marengo County, a statewide election would have to be held and the people of Alabama would vote for another amendment. The Linden City Council previously voted to receive a $300 license fee for Franceena’s to hold bingo games. They will now be required to vote down the motion in session or be in violation of state law.

In other news…
Another wreck puts another picture on the front of the Democrat. This time Goodloe managed to get a live body in the frame; one of the victims being put on a backboard. In the caption under the picture, Sutton talks about County Coroner Stuart Eatmon being accused of “chasing wrecks”, but makes no mention of his own guilt in being blood crazy.
Ruby Johnson was arrested on March 11th for the alleged theft of $31,612.37 from her employer Wal-Mart. According to Chief Avery, Johnson’s scheme was giving refunds “on receipts that didn’t exist.” The alleged thefts happened over a 12 month period. Johnson is currently in jail with $5000 bond.
The Times are finally dishing a little back at Linden. IT will be nice to see Sutton blow a gasket over someone having the “nerve” to tell the truth. Though the Times have seemed lately to sugar-coat Demopolis issues, it will be nice to see a fresh opinion to counter the ill-informed venom that spews from the Democrat every week.
