Get rid of webpage adverts

For those still using Internet Explorer, Here is yet another reason to switch to the webbrowser Firefox.

Quite simply, the ability to block webpage advertising with a few clicks.
How?
  1. Download Firefox.
  2. Install Firefox.
  3. Open Firefox.
  4. Download the Adblock Extention (It will install automatically). Click Here
  5. Restart Firefox.
  6. Now, just right click any Advertising image and click "Adblock Image" at the bottom of the dropdown box. Presto, gone.
To block a large number of advertisements at once, here is a little more advanced trick. Lets take the Demopolistimes.com website for example.

Goto their webpage, right click a banner and click Adblock Image.

The image that it shows being blocked will look something like this.
http://adsys.townnews.com/92287979155135/creative/demopolistimes.com/front+right2/24066.jpg
Since we can determine that adsys.townnews.com's primary purpose is to serve ads, we can safely remove ANY image that comes from that domain. You can do this by changing the above link to:
http://adsys.townnews.com/*
Notice the * . That is a wildcard that tells adblock to block any element coming from that domain. If we wanted to be more specific to just the times website, we could make it:

http://adsys.townnews.com/92287979155135/creative/demopolistimes.com/*

Flash advertisements work a bit diffrent, there will be an adblock tab that appears above or below the animation that you can click to block it. The same principle as above applies.

Happy (faster) browsing :-)

Re: Get rid of webpage adverts

I have been usiong Firefox for quite a while now and love it. Why you may ask?
  • Keeps up with all of my usernames and passwords, and autofills
  • No problems with spyware since I started using it
  • Better look
  • Doesn't give the "Page Can Not Ne Displayed" page, it just has a little pop up block telling you so

The only drawback that I have seen is that there are a few things that I have got to do in Internet Explorer. Like pay my power bill, although all other bills do fine in Firefox. And there have been a couple other sites with applets that wouldn't do right for some reason in Firefox. But you won't see me going back to IE anytime soon!

Re: Get rid of webpage adverts

The blocker in SP2 does nothing for Advertising banners, just Popups.

And if your THAT wary about stuff getting installed on your PC, then why would you use the biggest gateway of Malware/Spyware on the planet (Internet Explorer)?

Re: Get rid of webpage adverts

I just DLed Firefox and the Thunderbird Email add on. Not bad at all, however I have a very handy addon called Ispell on my IE that spell checks any typed text on any webpage (like right now I could hit the button and it would spellcheck this text)I guess Ispell isn't compatible with firefox or I just can't seem to find a way to add it. Does Firefox have any kind of addon on like that?

Re: Get rid of webpage adverts

While I agree with pop up blockers (one reason I use Firefox) adblockers will undermine the free nature of the internet.

A lot of these free websites only get paid for advertisements. No pay from advertisers, no free website.
