It’s a start…
U.S. Highway 80 is on slate to get 6 miles of itself 4-laned by next year. Barring public protest, endangered animals or plants, or Indian burial grounds, the project could commence by Nov. 2004. The 6-mile stretch would extend from State Road 28 in Marengo Co to State Road 28 in Sumter Co. This stretch runs right past Gulf States, and is speculated if 4-laned would attract industry to the area.
Too little, too late?
The City Council declared the Old School on Main Street in Demopolis an “emergency”, and has already put down to spend $55,000 on a new roof for the dilapidated structure. This basically solidifies the Council’s opinion that the school was worth saving. Considered by some in the community as a “landmark”, the roof will be the first of what will amount to many repairs on the old building. Citing water leaks and water damage from the old roof, the Council felt it necessary to act now, before the Old School was deemed “worthless”. As more and more money is poured into the building, look for more and more ways to charge people to use it.
Around the horn… - The “Tourism Committee of the West Alabama Regional Alliance” feels that tourism is a major source of income for our area and all the Black Belt Region. Well of course they do, considering their title.:-) They are working on a logo for their cause, and a brochure and website to help promote the area. (Why didn’t we think of that?) Though I’m sure it’s not needed, I would like to personally off the Demopolis.biz staff up for help in these matters; anything to help the community.
- Kudos to Scott Jones for speaking out for the nurses at Bryan Whitfield Hospital; who turned out in great numbers at a closed meeting with hospital beard members. As a nurse and former employee of the hospital (Home Health), I can relate to the demands of the nurses. When someone says salaries are “competitive”, they mean lower than but as high as we’re willing to go. When they say something like “other places are having the same problems” it’s a weak justification for not attempting to correct an identified problem. What I see happening here is Nabors calling attention to indigent care once again, and justifying little or no raises with cries of “no money”.
- The Demopolis Times editor and publisher, according to himself, is “not a women”. I’ve personally never met the he/she, so I couldn’t verify these statements. The only apparent obtainable photos of him are head-shots only. The forced part in the hair, small round glasses, and the “I’m holding back a large bowel movement” smile don’t suggest a lot of man-like qualities, they don’t suggest “women” either. I guess we’ll all just have to take him at his word. One last thing- If there is a lonely woman out there looking for someone to be with, and your only requirements are he has a job and all his teeth, PLEASE give ole Jon-boy a call, or e-mail him HERE. Maybe then he’ll quit complaining about his love life, or lack of it.
