WIN 98.5 says “no” to Dixie Chicks.
In a show of solidarity with other country stations, and to prove we’re just as redneck in Demopolis as they are in Texas, our local country station has refused to play anything by the country music band Dixie Chicks. According to the local station manager, the decision was made due to “what the listeners asked for.” Besides being the most popular country act in America since Garth Brooks hit the scene, the Dixie Chicks happen to have opinions. The now infamous statement “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas” has pissed off country music fans across America. Apparently, country musicians can only be drunks, dope heads, adulterers, and racists, and still enjoy success and fan approval. Have an opinion regarding politics, and your toast.
Goodloe VS Lankster. Round One.
Former District Attorney Barrown D. Lankster has taken exception some comments made by Goodloe Sutton, owner of the Democrat-Reporter. In an editorial I criticized for promoting vigilantism, Goodloe also stated regarding Lankster; “We will expect a good man or woman to take a hard stand against drug dealers. If they start acting like the ex-DA Barrown Lankster did, then why not vote for Lankster who won’t prosecute anybody for anything.” Lankster has demanded in a letter to Goodloe that he print a retraction in the next edition of the Reporter, or legal action would follow. Goodloe retracted the “Lankster won’t prosecute anybody” statement, and then proceeded to accuse Lankster of only prosecuting whites, of knowingly described a black man in a white ski mask as a white man, and other harsh accusations. See the March 27, 2003 issue of the Democrat to read the entire entry. I get the feeling the situation could get ugly in a hurry.
Noteworthy Notes… - If your street in Demopolis is in bad shape, speak up to your Councilmen NOW. They are in the process of figuring out which streets to fix and which ones not to fix, since they only see having less than half of the 1.2 million dollars it would cost to fix them all. District 2 Councilman Willard Williams was asked if he would spend his Community Development Grant money to fix the streets- tell him NO!! That money is for developing the community, not fixing something that’s the city’s responsibility.
- The new roof ordered an “emergency” by the City Council does not presently have a way of getting paid. Since the motion was granted without taking bids, they cannot get a grant to pay for it. No one in the Council seems to know where the money is going to come from, just that it needs to be done.
- The ALDOT wishes for any community input regarding the proposed 4-laning of U.S. Highway 80 from County Road 28 west to County Road 28 East. All comments, good or bad, should be made and sent by May 2nd, 2003. You can call Mr. Jerry L. Holt at (251) 275-4103, or E-mail: Holtj@dot.state.al.us
