Poker Update !

As discussed at our poker game last week we had planned on moving it to pats house. This is still ok with me, but the cabin is also free this week and will be occupied next week. So it is really up to pat where he wants to have it !Just let a brotha know.

It was the closest thing to Las Vegas or Reno that anyone could get in downtown Columbiana.

Until two weeks ago, the private dining room at Bernie's on Main was the place where people gathered for evening conversation among decks of cards and poker chips during the Texas Hold'em parties.

"We had a good time," said owner Bernard Tamburello. "It was very successful, and people really appreciated it."

Texas Hold'em, a form of poker, is growing in popularity across the nation, and the Birmingham area is no exception. The game is played regularly in several restaurants and pubs in Shelby County. Some advertise their tournaments in newspapers.

But Shelby County District Attorney Robby Owens says the parties are illegal, and last week he became one of the first district attorneys in the state to start shutting them down.

He probably won't be the last, though, said Randy Hillman, executive director of the Alabama District Attorney's Association. "The popularity of poker-styled games is growing very rapidly, and I guess the message that the DAs would send is that it's illegal and they will be prosecuted," he said.

Still, poker party hosts and players say they remain confused about what is legal and what is not.

Tamburello held his last game two weeks ago, stopping after he began hearing that the games' legality was being questioned.

On Tuesday, a building across the street from his restaurant became the site of the county's first poker raid. Owners of the building that houses the Coffee Kettle coffee shop and Davenport Bonding Co. said they didn't know their parties were illegal until seven members of the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force confiscated their tables, chips and cards.

For the record, Booya, besides never winning, has never once accepted anything for gratiously hosting our weekly games. Even though some of these businesses don't charge cover fees or take a percentage of the "pot" for hosting the games, the business and traffic generated by the games (drinks and food bought) are considered profits from the game.

The only reason the cops would show up to our game is if they want to buy in.
