Demopolis Gets New Businesses, Linden Gets a New Truck

More opportunities for Demopolis.

The Alabama Entrepreneurial Research Network is setting up shops all over rural Alabama. The purpose of these centers is to give would-be new businesses owners a place locally to get information on how to get a business off the ground. Used to if you wanted to get info, you had to travel to Tuscaloosa to get needed business information to develop a thorough business plan. Now there are centers located in Marengo, Sumter, Greene, Dallas, Perry, Hale, and Wilcox counties. The most visible results are the announcement of a new restaurant and café to open soon in the Demopolis area. According to Chamber of Commerce Director Kathy Leverett, “We have to get the word out to the general public that we do have something locally to help you if you want to start a business."

Snoop Doggy-Dog may want to move to Linden.

If you’re a dog in the Linden city limits, you have Goodloe Sutton on your side. It’s eating him alive that dogs just can’t roam free in the city limits. I’d drop the story myself, but besides picking up sticks and a new fire engine, there really isn’t anything relevant to report on in Linden. So, even though talk about the dog ordinance has appeared in just about every Democrat-Reporter for the last few months, Goodloe still feels the public wasn’t “properly” notified of the ordinance. According to Pam Duke, Linden City Clerk, the ordinance is legal. This statement comes after citing the opinions from the league attorney and the attorney general. According to Duke, since the town of Linden in 1950 had a census of less than 2000 people, the ordinance could be posted in three local places. I guarantee you anyone in Linden that owns a dog knows to keep it pinned, leashed, or locked down. Besides, if you’re going to just let the dog roam around town unattended, why even own the dog?

Tidbits…
  • Murder suspect Gerald Leon Watts was apprehended by Demopolis Police after officers recognized his name from a national alert system for wanted suspects. Watts is wanted in Blount County for murder. He was transported to Blount County last weekend, with no bond set.
  • Demopolis will host the Class 4A Section 4 girls softball tourney this Friday and Saturday. The first games on Friday will be at 12 noon. Demopolis will play at 2:30 against the winner of the Bibb County/Holt game. All games will be played at the SportsPlex.
  • School Fest is this Friday. Everyone should support your child’s school by supporting the Demopolis City Schools Foundation. With education funding taking a huge cut, it’s needed now more than ever. Since your tax dollars won’t be spent on education, spend some of your money directly to the cause.

Personally, I think the Linden Dog Ordinance IS fully legal. I feel it has had adequate publicity on the FRONT PAGE of the Democrat - Reporter thanks to Goodloe Sutton. His front page coverage of the issue itself should be more than adequate public notice of the proposed ordinance.
