I read your letter to the Democrat-Reporter regarding your request to honor our classmates that are no longer with us. I’m impressed that at this hectic time in your lives, you’re still able to remember others while so many things are going on in your own lives. I know the families of Crystal Harbin, Timothy Turner, and Andrew McNealy are grateful.

I would like to suggest though the issue using doves or butterflies not be pressed. I’m sure your principal would be willing to allow a more subtle way of showing your feelings. Perhaps everyone can wear a ribbon; your Valedictorian can say some words in his/her speech; the graduation programs have a page dedicated to your fallen students; possibly leave 3 chairs empty in remembrance; if the school will issue honorary diplomas, let the class present them to the families. I would be more than happy to do a webpage dedicated to your fellow students.

You only graduate from High School once. As badly as you might want to honor our fellow classmates, you don’t want to remember your most important day ill feelings towards the school that brought you there. I don’t think your Principal is against remembering Crystal, Timothy, and Andrew, he’s just against your chosen method. I can tell you the Democrat-Reporter printed your letter not because they’re concerned for your class, but because they want your school to be in a bad light. You’re graduating from the best school in West Alabama. Allow yourselves to shine brightly.

In case anyone hasn't read it.

Dear Mr. Sutton:

We are seniors at Demopolis High School. Throughout the past 13 years that we have been in school, we have lost three classmates due to death. We have asked our principal to release doves or butterflies in remembrance of Crystal Harbin, Timothy Turner, and Andrew McNealy at our graduation commencement. We are willing to take care of the expenses. His response was, "No! We are not going to have a carnival for graduation". He also stated, "We are going to have a dignified graduation!" He's acting as if we are requesting monkeys and clowns to run across the field. Our question is if doves or butterfiles are not dignified then what is? This indicated that our principal isn;t really concerned with our thoughts and how we want to express our feelings for our late classmates.

Sincerely,
The DHS Class of 2003

So DHS Class of 2003, what was your final resolution to this issue? What did you wind up doing in memory of your deceased classmates @ graduation last night?

Curious,

Stickman
