The Demopolis Lady Tigers won 5 out of 6 games to win DHS’s first state title since the 86 baseball team did it. Three of the games were won by 2 runs or less. They end the season with a record of 33-11 and a state crown.
Not bad for a team without any seniors. Look out next year! The tournament went like this:
- Game 1- The Tigers beat East Limestone 5-0.
- Game 2- The Tigers beat Gulf Shores 2-1. Lauren Roark pitched the win and had the winning RBI.
- Game 3- Bibb County gives the Tigers there only loss of the tourney. Kelly Keasler took the loss despite giving up only 5 hits to 12 strike outs.
- Game 4- The Tigers hit back-to-back home runs in the first to take East Lawrence 2-0. Roark gets the win along with the first HR.
- Game 5- Demopolis gets revenge beating Bibb Co 8-4, forcing a final game 6. Keasler took the win.
- Game 6- Tigers win 2-1 against Bibb Co to take the title. Roark wins her 3rd game of the tourney, earning her a spot on the All Tourney Team and MVP honors. Kelley Keasler, Katie Simmons, and Dorothy Knapp were also named to the All Tourney team.
Congratulations to the players, coaches and staff. It’s been arguably on of the greatest sports seasons in school history.
“Old School” showing it’s age.
The Old Main Street School will be closed to the public as of June 1st, 2003, until renovations can be completed; this coming at least three years too late. Despite the obvious (and not so obvious) potential for danger, the city has continued to use the dilapidated building for various organizations; including the Girl Scouts, the student suspension programs, and the Canebrake Players. Recent episodes of the ceiling falling in due to water damage gave cause to the City Council to fast-track funds to put on a new roof. Now, besides the roof project being way over budget, they’ve discovered burned wires inside the building. Caldwell stated, “We’re going to reschedule the activities there until we can get the wiring redone.” The council, in an attempt to get a “quick fix”,, lost possible grant money to fix the building by not letting contractors bid on the project. Now they are planning to spend unbudgeted money by declaring the Old School an “emergency”. (This is the only way they can legally spend unbudgeted money on the school.) The emergency is putting more money into this death trap. The Council needs to close it down and lock the doors, turn off the electricity, and wait for the state to take it over as a historic landmark. It worked for Gaineswood. We have facilities available for the few activities that are held there. This will end up costing way more than it will ever be worth.
In other news… - The 167th Engineering Unit of Demopolis is coming home Tuesday, May 20th 2003 at 1 p.m. The public is invited out to the armory to welcome the Guard unit back home. Despite the war in Iraq, the unit never deployed from Ft. Benning into action. Welcome home troops!
