As of Friday, August 30th, their have been 2 confirmed cases of the West Nile Virus in Marengo County These cases include a 10 year old girl from Faunsdale and a 30 year old man from Linden. According to the CDC, those infected with the virus present either no symptoms or possibly flu-like symptoms. Those persons at the greatest risk for serious problems from WNV are very young children, the elderly, or persons with suppressed immune systems such as those on chemotherapy or have HIV or AIDS. The virus is transmited from birds to mosquitoes to birds, and from mosquitoes occasionally to humans. The virus cannot be spread from humans to humans or animals to humans. Prevention of the virus is simply preventing mosquito bites. A good FAQ on prevention can be found here. (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/qa/prevention.htm)
