Walnut & 80 - Wreck Central
I'm wondering just how many more accidents we're going to have at the intersection of Walnut and Highway 80 before something is done. With the increasing traffic on Highway 80, all the intersections are getting more and more dangerous, but this particular one is becoming a death trap.

I'm not sure what's worse about this area. There are no turn lanes for north/south traffic. This causes folks to make a turn lane coming off Walnut, which can't be safe considering there's a car blocking the view of 80 where the traffic is coming from. 2 fast food joints surround the area, adding less than observant motorists more worried about their orders than the traffic they are pulling into. Both sides of the north/south part of the intersection have the driver either going extremely uphill or extremely downhill. When more than a few cars are on each side trying to either cross 80 or turn onto it, there's a confused battle of "who has the right of way". The intersection was not designed for the amount of traffic its currently handling.

I agree, they need to do some serious refiguring on that intersection. Seems like there is an accident there weekly lately and they seem to get worse all the time. The only way to stop people from pulling along stopped cars and turning right there to go west on 80 is to narrow that down to a single width street. It will tick a lot of people of off to make them have to wait for the light but it will cut down on a lot of people pulling out in front of cars they didn't see coming due to their blocked view. I don't see any other way around it myself.

You are right. Something definitely needs to be done. It's scary there and now that I have a teenage driver in the house it's even more frightening. I always caution her to avoid that intersection if at all possible.

There is no right turn lane there for sure and yes I have seen people using it Myself and they do not have a view of whAt is coming I know!! They should be written up if thye do this!! There is a lot of increased traffic here I know but there is also no room to make the lanes as the land there is all private but on th eone going north there is room to do this!!

Well Papa as for being ticketed for doing this...I know in Memphis if you are turning in a non turning lane or going around someone who is turing they will ticket you. Of course they still do it, but maybe if it's illegal to do that and enough people get ticketed they will stop doing it. Sgt501, is it illegal?

I understand that the upcoming paving of Walnut Street will include the creation of a right turn lane from Walnut onto U.S. Highway 80 (for southbound traffic on Walnut wishing to turn west on U.S. Highway 80).

Has anyone else heard this?

I have not heard that at all. I do feel like Walnut Ave is long over due to get repaved. A major part of the problem, is the fact that whenever someone is trying to make a left hand turn off of Walnut on to Hwy 80, you have to wait for any cars which are coming straight across from the Hardees side. This causes traffice to backup and a lot of people become impatient. I have waited at that light 3 times waiting to get onto 80 during busy times. As traffice gets more and more held up on Walnut, it makes it more difficult for the cars at McDonalds to get out which just adds to the problem.

Also, I have to add that the speed limit on Walnut Ave is 35 mph!!!!!! I have observed several cars going at very high rates of speed down this road. If you travel down Walnut, please observe the 35 mph speed limit. I saw a accident about 6 months ago at the intersection of Pettus and Walnut where a SUV had been flipped on its side. I don't know the details of how it happened, but it seems likely to me that someone wasn't going 35.

The City of Demop could get rich from writing speeding tickets on Walnut.
