<!--===========CAPTION==========-->Gov. Bob Riley is joined Tuesday by Beth Holloway-Twitty, while calling for a boycott of Aruba.<!--===========/CAPTION=========-->

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) -- Gov. Bob Riley called for a nationwide travel boycott of Aruba on Tuesday until authorities on the Dutch Caribbean island cooperate more fully with the family of a teenager who has been missing since May.

Riley asked the governors of the other 49 states to join him in urging a boycott of Aruba on behalf of the family of Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old Mountain Brook High graduate last seen on the island on May 30.

Her mother, Beth Holloway-Twitty, joined Riley at the Alabama Capitol for the boycott announcement.

She contends Aruban authorities have failed to adequately investigate the possible murder of her daughter, who was with a Dutch teenager and two Surinamese brothers on the night she disappeared.

The young men were held for a time but have been released.

Here's to it and here's to it again...if you get to it and don't do it...may you never get to it again!

Re: Gov. Riley call for boycott

How many unsolved murders are there in Alabama?

I fail to see how this is going to help matters. I wouls like to see evidence, or examples of where they could do something differently within their laws to catch those responsible.

I probably wouldn't mind going myself but would not consider taking a graduating class for a trip. Yes there are unsolved murders but at least you can see how their law enforcement didn't aggressively go after the suspects immediately.

Re: Gov. Riley call for boycott

I agree scootergal, but right here within our own city, we are letting criminals go everyday! Until we as citizens start standing up for what we know is right, nothing will change! I think we should put our foot down and make law enforcement do their job! Of course, this only stands for a few, but the few bad apples are going to cause someone to lose their life!

I don't want to ruffle any feathers but we don't know anymore about what happened down there than what the media has "served" us with. I know it is a bad situation for the family but some of the family's actions give me the impression that they are trying to keep a media hype going. I don't know their true reasons for their actions but sometimes I get the feeling that it could be motivated by things to occur in the future like movie, book sales, etc. I am not implying that is their motive but why do they keep implying that the judicial authorities of Aruba are involved in some sinister coverup but they can't present any evidence to that.

All things being equal, I would probably support Gov. Riley in the next election but I think his "press conference" today was a bad political move!

My wife says if it was my daughter that was involved, I would have a different attitude. Maybe so?

Re: Gov. Riley call for boycott

I don't think it's fair to use a poor country's main economic resource against them because of how the police may or may not be handling the situation. As Fleming said, we only know what we've been told. How insane would it be for Aruban officials to tell everything they know? How many missing persons/murder cases do we have that have gone DECADES unsolved? I have no plans of going to Aruba, but not because of this boycott. I think it's a little too emotional, irrational, and over-the-top. If this had been my daughter, I'm sure I would be just as emotional, irrational and over-the-top, but I don't think the governor should have joined in.

Re: Gov. Riley call for boycott

I fully support Gov. Riley and the call for the travel band. It is time for some accountability in Aruba. We know some things as facts:

1. Natalee Holloway was in Aruba and was at Jack and Charlies the
night she disappeared.
2. Natalee left Jack and Charlies with Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe
brothers.
3. Natalee never returned to the hotel.
4. Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers lied to investigators when
they said they dropped Natalee off at the hotel.

My gripe with Arubian authorities is they never did a serious investigation.

As for using the poor county's main economic resource against them, this is the ony resource left to use as leverage.

I have a couple of comments. If it were my child, sure I would be hollering and using all the media hype I could to get and keep my child in the press. As far as Riley, since he has cut the court system so drastically as to LAY ME OFF for three months and keep our office at 75% of staff, I will definitely support anyone OTHER THAN Riley. I'm probably not a good one to be impartial as to who for Governor but I'd rather vote for Siegelman who's under indictment rather than Riley who has laid off good hard working people (as myself).
