City Decorations
Do ya'll remember the wooden elves and deer that the city put out for decoration up and down the highway last year? Like the turkey's. Anyway, have you noticed they are missing this year? I heard that the street department sent a whopping bill to the COTR committee last year expecting them to pay for them and for the man hours to put them out without first getting it cleared by the committee. The COTR people refused stating that this was a city decoration expense and should be paid for by the city...just as with other holidays they decorate for...(Thanksgiving, etc.) So since the COTR committee wouldn't pay for it the city refused to put them out this year and they are sitting in a warehouse somewhere at the street department. Do they not realize that COTR is on a very limited budget and shouldn't this be a city expense?

Has anyone else heard anything about this? What do ya'll think?

Have not heard that but it would not surprise me. They would rather spend money on some run down building downtown.

You will also notice that the trees in the square are not lit as in years past.

My suggestion would be to discuss this with your councilman and Mayor, and see how the situation can be fixed. The answer you may get from them will be that COTR is an ALL VOLUNTEER event, and the Chamber, not the City, is responsable for everything that goes on.

The Chamber basically is the COTR. However you are correct in that the COTR committee is made up of volunteers. My question is that why would the city feel that it's ok for them to decorate for Thanksgiving with their cut out turkeys and they (city) pay for that but not the cut out deer and elves when they (city) built them on their own. It was not requested by the COTR or the Chamber to build these. I have asked about this and they won't put them out because they want the Chamber/COTR to reimburse them for them when the Chamber/COTR did not ask for them to be built. It just seems a shame that they are sitting in a warehouse just because someone is trying to be stubborn about it.

Let's all get together and build a football stadium and charge it to the city. Is it not in the city's best interest to help out COTR? Think of all the tax dollars that are farmed out of COTR. I say let's move the fair in the square out of the city limits and take away the taxes.

I may be mistaken, but I could swear that driving by the square the last few nights, the trees have been lit. Are we talking about different trees, or am I seeing things?

You're right OHM, there are trees lit, exactly 2 of them. Also the shrubs and railing at City Hall. In years past all the trees around the square have had lights, as well as a Christmas tree in the square.
