Is Downtown Demopolis Dying?

We seem to be losing ground in keeping downtown Demopolis a vibrant community center. It seems to me that, if businesses keep locating and relocating on Highway 80, little will be left of Downtown Demopolis. In my view, that would be tragic.

What do you think? And, what, if anything, do you think can be done to revitalize Downtown Demopolis?

Re: Is Downtown Demopolis Dying?

Will be hard to revitalize downtown Demopolis. Lets face it....there not really much downtown to go after....everything is now out on hwy 80 where the traffic is....businesses are going to go where theres the most activity, which i see as being hwy 80.

Re: Is Downtown Demopolis Dying?

Sorry but I disagree with you wholeheartedly. If you go downtown and look around you'll see there are new businesses going in. There has been a lot of fixing up and much effort to bring it back. I for one don't believe it's dying at all. We have some great shops downtown that I would bet most of those who say there isn't much downtown have never even stepped foot into. We now have 3 places to eat, one of which also sells gifts and art. My business has art, gifts and framing, Pamper Me Perfect is great for gifts or to just treat yourself or others. There's a little antique shop opened up, Designer Showcase and others. Why do people keep saying that downtown is dying??? There are fewer empty storefronts now than there ever has been.

Re: Is Downtown Demopolis Dying?

I think it keeps coming up because of all the activity out on Highway 80....I havent been downtown in a while. I really havent had any need to go downtown lately. Maybe I should ride downtown and check everything out.....

I find it tragic as well. It's always sad to see a downtown that was once flourishing, now strugglin. I believe in preserving main street America.

I agree AngelWing! I think the problem is advertising! I had no idea of some of the new businesses located in downtown Demopolis! My daughter came home from a Birthday party Friday telling me about Pamper Me Perfect. Had never heard of it!

Re: Is Downtown Demopolis Dying?

Downtown will continue to die until we start to develop more foot traffic. Other cities have revitalized their downtowns by creating more living space there. Demopolis has great buildings for this with lots of upstairs space to be made into apartments with down stairs business fronts.

You think downtown is dying? What do you think is going to happen to the price of property on hwy 80 after the by-pass goes in? Super Wal-mart might be the only thing to keep out of town traffic coming into Demopolis.

This is a good point. More apartments = more people downtown. A viable commodity that would call for renovation and would flourish downtown without the need for "foot traffic".

Glad to hear it cchesshir! Be sure to introduce yourself when you come by Angel Wing Gallery.

That is what it's going to take guys. Everyone says they hate to see downtown go by the wayside due to so many moving to the highway, well many are moving to the highway because people have stopped visiting downtown. We have a lovely town and I get lots more business from travelers stopping in than people I've known for years.

As for advertising, we do tons of advertising. I bet I spend up to $400 a month just on ads and yet I still hear "I didn't know you did framing" or "I didn't know you had jewelry" all the time from people. What more can a person do??
